Dip and dip direction seems so much simpler and unambiguous

How do you establish dip quickly though? Ours was to find strike first, then 90 degrees off that for dip. Doing it via dip only would seem like it would require a lot of measurements to find the true dip rather than an apparent one close to the true dip?
