The final piece of steel being put in place for Cleveland’s Sohio Building, probably 1984. Local 17 Ironworkers stand atop a beam with the US and Cleveland flags mounted, with the Lake Erie shoreline in the background. A modest 1980s middle-class Cleveland kitchen. Dark wood paneled cabinets, sheer curtains in front of plastic weather-sealed windows. My dad back from a late night at the steel mill, possibly coked out. Curly black hair, bushy black mustache, gray hooded sweatshirt under a mud- or rust-caked jean jacket. Crazed look in his eyes. Iconic green Stanley thermos in the background. I stand next to him probably five or six years old holding up novelty bear claw slippers. Similar picture of my dad as before, now in coveralls. A portrait of me as a kid wearing a kids ironworkers union sweater.
