LOL 😂
The Flip!!! That play still blows my mind. Cheers👍
One of them forgot his glove, and the third man, Peter Norman, suggested they wear one on different hands. Norman wore a human rights badge, and for his trouble he was shunned, ending his running career. He was a man of principles and courage and should not be forgotten.
There's an excellent documentary about Norman's heroism. www.imdb.com/title/tt0874...
Thank you.
Peter Norman didn’t feel he had right to pull his fist in the air and he was correct. Instead, he wore a badge in support, along with several others 👇🏽
Thanks for the context. Although the image is seared in my mind, I was only two at the time, and some of the info was left out of my education.
The look on a guy's face who'd run multiple marathons when I was about to pass him with 200 yards left to the finish line. 😳 He picked up the pace and finished about 10 yd ahead of me. 😂

This one has been with me since it happened in 1968.
What's the story here?!

Muhammad Ali: “Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs?”
Look up Peter Norman (the white guy in the photo) he ended up supporting Tommie Smith and John Carlos (the other two athletes in that photo) lt cost him his athletic career. Smith and Carlos stayed friends with him until he died in 2006 and were pallbearers at his funeral.
This Aussie says thanks for the post Chris. The Norman story and the heavy price he paid is not well known, if at all, even in Australia.
Such a horrific outcome for courageous Peter Norman.
That's poignant, Peter Norman was a hero
Trump would gaol these men.
Tommie Smith taught track and field at the college I attended after the Olympics when no other organization would employ him. He was awesome.

Great original post but thread degenerated into posts by Americans about their obscure, parochial 'world series' sports. Shows Blue Sky is still far more American than X. I understand they invented the Internet and everything else in life...
what exactly do you want Americans to write about? sports that they dont watch?
Go back to Chicago, your liberalism doesn't work here! Along with, how I'm wearing pride colors. Here in America, we've got the most willing, ignorant fascist pigs. They really flip out, when I put up PK Subban, deleting Marchand. After that, it's how dare I root, for the Montreal Canadians.
They don't watch a lot of sports. Which they pretend, to care about honestly. As referenced in a response here, they went to rewrite how Norman won, and was awarded the gold along, with another runner, due to this black panther display.
One of my distant relations a former sportswriter actually put that up, in media removal. Sickening, disgusting, frustrating, and it's damned embarrassing to be related to that. His take was black athletes should just be happy they're not slaves.
I'm thinking of a distant family relation. A former sportswriter here State side, who tried to white wash this. Along with how Norman was awarded the gold medal, for the Black athletes displays. The scary part is, people still believed, his ignorant fecking bullsh*t.

The Argentinean sports magazine El Gráfico titled that photo as "The embrace with the soul", in which Fillol and Tarantini merge in a hug after the end of the game. In that image also appears a fan, Víctor Dell Aquila, who despite not having his two arms, "hugs with his soul" the new champions.

I love that there is an Australian in this photo just going along with history.
I was 10 watching this asking my dad what it was about because all I heard about was the uniting of the Olympic spirit. The beginning of me finding out about American cruelty
yes, it's actions like these that are the catalyst of awareness .. someone somewhere will see it and ask what is going on
They actually let him know they were going to do it. He was in favour of it.
While he wasn't expelled or stripped of his medal like the American athletes, he faced significant repercussions in Australia. He was ostracized by the Australian Olympic Committee wasn't selected for the 1972 Munich Olympics despite qualifying, and was largely overlooked in Australia for many years
38 years after giving the Black Power salute during their medal ceremony at the 1968 Olympics, Tommie Smith and John Carlos were pallbearers at the funeral of Peter Norman, the Australian silver medalist that was with them on the podium

Surya Bonaly was never "soft" enough for the judges. She was too athletic, too powerful on the ice. The only woman at the time to complete a quad, she didn't get credit for it in the 1994 games because she under rotated. And then she fell. She knew she would not medal and instead stunned the world.

I remember this. It was incredible to watch.
I seem to remember originally, judges would not give her credit for the backflip because she landed on 2 feet. So she perfected it to land on one as you can see in that video, and they still did not give her credit. BS
It was thought to be impossible to land it on one foot so it was a banned move at the time. She got a deduction for the backfip but she proved that at least she could land it on one foot. It's no longer banned but it doesn't get points. Also to correct my post it was 1998 not 94 😊
Thanks for that clarification. I knew there was something about the two footed landing.
Oh yes, I remember. What they did to her was horrible.
I was 10 in 1968. I remember this well and my parents supported what they were doing. So it was a great statement all three of them made.

Ha! I'd forgotten that one. Perfect answer.
Two things about this one. First, the white fist, showing that at least one white UM player got it and was willing to stand with his teammates. Second, several Michigan State players on the other sideline were doing the same thing.
This is nowhere in the neighborhood of the Olympic expression. But 1988, Dodger’s vs. Oakland at Chavez Ravine- a badly injured Kirk Gibson limping around the bases “ fist pumping” after his World Series pinch hit walk off home run. The Vin Scully call was also a classic-

Oh wow! I have been to some major events, but I would love to see an Olympics competition. It's so powerful in person when you can really see how much speed elite skaters have and how high the jumps are. Even the best television camera work doesn't quite capture it.
Not a sport
I have seen burly hockey players brought low by attempting figure skating. Silly costumes aside, the condition they have to be in to do what they do and compete at the elite level and the work they put in off the ice would make most people cry. They are athletes.
Ok. But anything with a judge is not sport anymore than the academy awards are.
Do you feel the same about gymnastics? Or diving?
Not saying they are not athletes, incase that's not clear. But sports have winners and lovers not opinions
Yes. And supreme court cases. Boxing is a gray area

Peter Norman is an Australian hero. I’m glad an apology was given but that doesn’t take away from the ostracism he faces cruelly throughout his life and he should be remembered not just as an amazing runner but an altruistic and courageous man
So moving — 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
There is a statue in San Jose on the SJSU campus. It is HUGE! sjtoday.6amcity.com/1968-olympic...
Sadly the third hero of this act is not included. Peter Norman, the silver medalist from Australia, sacrificed his career to stand by and stand up for John Carlos and Tommy Smith. Vilified by his own government denied recognition as late as the 2000 Sydney Olympic games.
The 22-foot statue prominently features Smith and Carlos, but Norman requested that his space in the statue be left empty so that viewers could “Take a Stand” and join the movement
I did 'take a stand' when I visited. Though it was during the BLM summer, as a white person, I did not feel I should raise my fist or take a knee. Instead, I forced my hat and respectfully bowed my head. The monument is HUGE with the athletes over 10' (3.048m) tall.
Arrgh....dang autocorrect...doffed my hat...
💔
Oh wow that’s right in line with his character. What a legend. RIP Norman.
Thank you. I was upset Norman wasn't represented on the statue.
It was in the article. I copied this from the linked article. (Also people should read the article)
Seems past time to add Peter Norman.
Why is Peter Norman who stood in solidarity with the two Americans missing? Whose gloves are the US athletes wearing?

Can I ask what he did that impacted you?
I remember this as a kid. Seared into my brain. And even then, I thought it was ballsy as all fuck! Two black dudes basically flipping off the world. My racist parents lost their ever-lovin' fucking minds which made me love it all the more. I think I started saying "Fuck you!" a lot after this.
I was 12 and realized my parents and I were not seeing the same world.
I think that's about right I was 12 in 6th grade & it made me sad to realize that I could perceive that I was more intelligent & more compassionate than either of my parents. A part of me was "fuck, yeah!" but a bigger part of me was just sad It's hard to believe I'm their son. We are so different
This is a fantastic thread. Thank you!

Yesterday was the 42nd anniversary.
For sure.
As an Australian my choice is the man on the podium with the 2 American athletes who are wearing his gloves. This incident destroyed his career & his life. He was vilified & ostracised at home not allow to compete any more. Smith & Carlos showed great respect they were pallbearers at his funeral
It's satisfying to think that, whatever you might assume at first glance, all three of the athletes on that podium were people of courage and integrity. It's a picture not just about righteous protest, but also about being an ally.
Absolutely
Peter Norman - a big guy!
Yes. To me this has to be the greatest travesty in Australian sport.
Here's a really good documentary about his heroism, and the price he paid. www.imdb.com/title/tt0874...
Thank you.
Used to be a painting of that photo on the side of a house next to the railway line between MacDonaldtown and Newtown. Not sure if it's still there.
An airbrush mural of the trio on podium was painted in 2000 in the inner-city suburb of Newtown in Sydney.[a] Silvio Offria, who allowed an artist known only as "Donald" to paint the mural on his house in Leamington Lane is now listed as an item of heritage significance
I couldn't believe it when I learned that they didn't even put his name in the records of Australian medal winners.
Has that been rectified?
Seems like it, tough to Google things nowadays. I know in 2012 the Australian House of Representatives issued an apology
The White Australia Policy was still in place then, much to our eternal shame. The crusty old white chaps in charge of our athletics associations couldn’t bear any of that nonsense could they?
It's a great shame that the mural of the scene on a private house wall in McDonaldtown, Sydney (between Newtown & Redfern), once seen by thousands of train commuters daily, has been obscured by a high wall that reduces sound levels from busy train traffic. He was courageous.
Most people don’t know that part of the story.
Very sad outcome. Glad they respected him.
Had a distant family member, who tried to rewrite, how Norman was a gold medalist. And, how the Black athletes had their medals stripped, for this display. What's worse, the distant family relation was a fecking sports writer, here in the States.
Obviously had no idea what actually happened. Peter Norman gave them the gloves & was wearing a badge of the Olympic Projects For Human Rights. Australia actually had a White Australia Policy on immigration in 68. 1967 our indigenous were finally recognised as people! Imagine his courage.
I learned about that in world history in high school. Along with Bruce Smith who opposed that. Actually came up a few years ago, with someone trying to say how the white only policy, was how the United States should be. His words for me were implying I was a race traitor in subtle fashions.
Interesting Australia at the time was a dead zone. Italians & Greeks were pariahs. Since WAP was removed we’ve become a vibrant multicultural country, food & culture second to none. Thanks to Italians the best coffee Starbucks failed here. We still have the racists unfortunately.
Thanks for telling the truth. His story has not been told enough.

1989 qualifier for the Italia '90 World Cup (footy - or soccer if you're American). Terry Butcher gives his all for England, against Sweden. England Manager Bobby Robson was quoted as saying people had won the Victoria Cross for less 😂 Hyperbole aside, it's an image that will be with me for life.
NB, sigh. No, 'soccer' is NOT an American word. It is British English. From 1880s. And still used by rugger and posher folk in UK. And Sky Sports main show is 'Soccer Saturday'. Was used frequently even by sports commentators until 1970s, eg Coleman. Also used in Oz, SA, NZ, v other 'football codes
Sigh... Do YOU call it soccer? Does anyone you know call it soccer? N.B. nobody here said it's an American word. [contd]
[contd] I clarified that the referenced sport was "footy, or soccer if you're American" because the VAST majority of people in the UK call it footy or football and the car majority in the States call it soccer. Nobody wanted a conversation about the origins and etymology of association football. 🙄

The story built during summer of 1980. I followed it. I've run in "Terry Fox runs" that continue the work of the Terry Fox Foundation. "The Terry Fox Story" (1983) is good. But - when he started running across Newfoundland, he ran long miles (roughly a marathon each day for 143 days) w/o attention.

I was just scrolling to see if anyone had added this absolute gem. 👍🏻😆
😀 I did the same thing before posting this gem. At first, I thought about posting Eric “Bruce Lee” Cantona's action.
I remember watching when Kerri Strug won the gold with a broken ankle. I remember being vaguely impressed with her guts, but more horrified that her coach let her do that to herself. And then when Simone Biles made the self-affirming choice to not compete in 2020, I was glad, for her and the sport.
People should know. I never hear it discussed. All of this

Did not know of the pall bearers either ! Thank you 🙏🏼
