The narrative set by the UK media is completely anti-immigration. I live a few miles from Birmingham and lived in it for 30 years - it’s not perfect, but it’s a great example of how different ethnicities can get along. If you were to believe the press, you’d think we were at war with each other.

There is no UK media. The press you see in Birmingham is different to the press I see in Edinburgh. We don’t have much about immigration. Supporters of Scottish independence claim that Scottish media are all unionist.

Ok, fair enough. Let’s be clear, then, the English media is massively anti-immigration - the truth is that only a small number of inward-looking towns are really behind that sentiment. It saddens me that they dominate what our press puts out. They are poisoning what we stand for.

I have also heard that ‘people’ believe that southerners are literally overrun by people arriving on boats. It is very easy to divide and rule because historically that is how the countries have been run
