Even at its peak, the printing press never had the reach of Big Phone.

Even if that’s true, the metropole is never where this kind of brainrot manifests most strongly Let’s take a historical example - the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. It poisoned brains, but you had to be able and inclined to read it to begin with, or trust the account of someone who did. (1/2)

And the most vulnerable to this kind of brainrot are low social trust. I think reliance on word of mouth diminished the potency, and reliance on literacy was a great filter. With short form video, it’s just easier to indulge in reactionary fantasy now. (2/2)

Consider that the protocols made its way from russia in 1903 to illiterate people in the southern US and peasants across europe. Like people disseminated info with/without the phone.

Printing press to word of mouth was absolutely a thing in paris. And in a world starved of entertainment people did consume a fuckton of news even if other people had to read. People in france learned to read off of the text produced by nicaire

People had to talk to each other once though. They don’t have to do that anymore, there aren’t people with brakes

We have the opposite. People can choose not consume news as well

Its very useful and while people are getting radicalized i basically think its comparable to previous events. the difference is the uninformed are consuming more politics than before, and more politics as entertainment

i dont think this is true! Like a lot of people have very apolitical short form video feeds, and we know from survey data are not up on current events in a way they used to be

Ah, but I think that's not how it works. Those short form vids may have zero "political" content, but they're rich with vibes, and there's a lot of unspoken assumptions about eg gender roles.

i think a lot of the recent election was people not paying attention, they get scared from pandemic + inflation, and go to the opposing govt and get into politics. This is basically what happened in france over and over again!
