Recognizing that the best part of the country to visit is the South Island is just observational reality. Especially if you are a tourist. I don't see and tourist advertisements for Auckland or Wellington, do you?

And on the tourism front: I have spent a lot of time recreationally around Auckland (and to a lesser extent Wellington). There are a myriad of good (and some great) tourist things around our cities - of course all of this depends on individual interests.

I also love the South Island BTW - but when I'm there I set aside my love of being able to jump in the ocean and see sooo much like I can in the Coromandel, Auckland and Northland.
