I noticed my work-related costs fell dramatically when I moved from Northern Ireland to NZ and this was primarily because there was much less expectation in Christchurch that I would wear formal office clothes, tights, makeup, high heels and have a hairstyle that required maintenance.

I managed to escape without ever buying a full suit, but my Northern Irish employer had rules about no denim, no trainers, and no logo t-shirts. We were a subsidiary of a company on another continent and we had no customer interaction whatsoever and no clients to impress so it was all unnecessary.

My work related spending has dropped significantly since I have been largely working from home. I've still got suits but only wear them when F2F with clients, less lunches in cafes, MUCH less commute costs etc. My spending has both reduced and moved focus to things that actually matter to me.

😂 So I guess I am already "close" to my retirement spending profile (with the possible exception of boat related expenditure ... that has gone up over the last couple of years!!! and is part of the refocus on things I WANT to do)
