I never suggested voting for evil of any sort, just "least worst". Not all our candidates are evil so there are still options without just letting everyone else decide without voting oneself.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
I think you are misreading what I said. I am not suggesting voting for evil parties. I'm suggesting that not every candidate in an election is evil and even if I disagree with them on some things they might be the best choice I've got so they get my vote.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
Do you not make any demands of them? I sure do, as do lots of other people. Not sure how much it changes anything but it's worth doing.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
I am in favour of supporting the best candidates and parties in advance of elections (and afterwards), making the best choices we have on election day which for me includes voting, and submitting for or against bills etc. once we have a government making changes.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
How is not voting anything *but* throwing your vote away? You're not voting, you don't have a vote. You can do lots of other things to sway things in your preferred direction that aren't voting, but if you don't vote you literally don't get a vote.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
Well I am not going to throw away my vote just because I don't love everything about any of the candidates I'm able to vote for. Just being the best of a bad lot isn't the same as being fascists.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely not. It's just an option. My preferred response is to vote for the best, or least worst, candidate available, knowing that we have an imperfect system, imperfect parties, and imperfect individual candidates but somebody will definitely get in and I don't want it to be the actual worst.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
Who are you addressing here?
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
The independent candidates aren't going to be perfect either. I wasn't suggesting you could only vote for a larger party. Vote for whoever you think is best if you think there is a best option; it's your right to exercise (or not) as you please.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
Or stand up and be the candidate you want, if you're game for that (I wouldn't be).
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
With the system we have and the imperfect parties and candidates we have, you will end up with an imperfect government regardless. Failing to vote just means you are not using the chance to sway any of that in your preferred direction. If you prefer to wash your hands of it that's your choice.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed. It's not like *nobody* would get in if enough people withheld their votes--someone is going to get in regardless, so we have to figure out the best candidate if there are no perfect ones, and the least worst candidate if there are no good ones at all.
Rev. Genesis ๐ฎ๐ช ๐ณ๐ฟ (@genesisnz.bsky.social)
