Obviously great casting from a ticket moving perspective but I have an annoying opinion which is that it's a totally different play with Escola and without, and without it's fun but pretty insubstantial. Which is why that was the most deserved acting Tony in history
Would love to hear more. What made the Escola performance such a standout?
I saw it once with them and once without, and it was clear Escola has such a strong sense of who the character is that isn't necessarily innate to the role as written - their Mary Todd is ridiculous and outlandish, but there's emotional depth and some real sadness.
With the other actress, it felt like the ridiculousness was at the forefront without much of the accompanying depth. The ending is so surreal that it really requires that character complexity to pay off, at least for me! Overall, it was funny both times but a much more moving play with Cole.
