It’s so transparent that the only things we “can’t afford” are those that materially improve people’s lives. I live in a place with free buses. Everything is faster and less stressful because one point of confrontation is gone. I know the drivers are happier!

Obviously, there would be scaling differences: my town is two orders of magnitude smaller than NYC, but c’mon!

But there have been free transit projects and it has not brought, to my knowledge, better results... To me subsized or free tickets to people works better

It adds an extra step and make it less likely that people will just take the bus rather than hop in a car. I’m telling you that my town has had better results with free buses. More efficient service means more frequent trips and no prior steps required.
