I do find it really annoying that regardless of how good a game is in certain genres it will never be in contention for goty but a 3rd person action adventure game that is just really well made and doesn't do anything really to stand out will have a much better chance to be nominated

Yeah, I think as far as games are concearned it's coincidental and nothing rings true. Alan Wake 2 didnt just release late to bag in on awards season to captialize on some recency bias lmao. It's just common to release a game in Q4.
