I imagine it will have a negative effect in the economy as an added bonus, since all the troops had to leave real jobs to do the fake ones.

I know guardsmen who are self employed or business people like plumbers who lose money when they are deployed. All the units are from red states so presumably most are trump voters. They may have screwed themselves

Yes, they work regular jobs and their leave from those jobs is mandatory. Employers must guarantee them a job upon return.
