🇨🇦 Investigative journalism in Canada is not what it used to be. It's running on fumes. Years of cuts, concentration, and closures of local outlets have gutted the time and resources reporters need to expose corruption, corporate abuse, and systemic failures. Too many stories are never fully told.1/4

The consequence is a weaker Canadian democracy. Without strong journalist watchdogs digging in, power hides in the shadows; politicians get away with misinformation and platitudes. Corruption thrives, and trust erodes because there is no real follow-up or adversarial questioning. 2/4

More support is needed for truth‑tellers and independent editorial freedom. Protect and give them the time to dig—value depth over clicks. Because without them, the lights are out on accountability and democratic integrity. Without them, politicians keep acting dumb — and keep dumbing us down. 3/4

The erosion of strong, independent journalism in Canada leaves politicians like Poilievre, Smith, and Ford go largely unchallenged. Instead of probing scrutiny, we get soundbites for clicks on news websites. Without rigorous reporting, we're left with theatre in place of accountability.🇨🇦 4/4

A great thread. I think there are a lot of us who feel the same.

I completely agree. I would like to see a rejuvenation of investigative actual journalism and a return to a news channel that we can all watch that gives accurate news. And not that equal time to either side crap, but call it like it really is & let us decide. Hard to do w/out bias, but possible

Most of the CBC panellists are party strategists or former strategists. It’s wholly without value, except for the stoking of culture wars.

That’s a problem, right? Their goal isn’t honest intellectual progress—it’s pushing the party line. What's worse, in my view, is that these panelists weigh in on every topic under the sun, regardless of their expertise. The result? A spectacle of argument masquerading as meaningful debate.

Yes. Same problem as US. Nothing is “news” and nothing is real. It’s just a reality show.

We need to stop funding foreign owned news outlets with our tax money. For example Postmedia.
