Anyone know what the consensus is now on how long COVID is contagious for? I’m planing to mask regardless for a while now, but a loved one is in hospital so I need accurate info - which is maddeningly difficult to find!

I haven't seen anything about the period changing since like 2021, tbh, just that various authorities shortening the quarantine period for reasons unrelated to medical advice.

Yeah. I know some people go by whether they test negative on a covid test but I’ve also heard that presence is antibodies or whatever doesn’t correlate with contagiousness so idk. We’re also having to postpone the baby’s first birthday party over this. Sigh.

so sorry a loved one is in hospital (+ the postponement.been there for both 😔) all of this makes hard situations even harder i’ve always done 2 negs on a rapid 48 hrs apart. 8 + days has been our shortest but up to 12 masking in the hospital is a good call tho-both to protect your loved one+yrself

The answer is a relative one unfortunately -- you're a vector for as long as you're infectious. Different people clear infection @ different rates, so there's no hard & fast "# of days", despite CDC's claim of 5 days being sufficient (extremely rare it's that short a time). The most reliable.. (1/2)

..way to determine you're "in the clear" is to test negative on rapid antigen tests for at least 4-5 consecutive days, testing daily. Your body only makes antigens when you're actively infected; PCR's detect viral genetic material, including dead virus, & antibodies will be positive far longer (2/2)
