Canada, Southern Ontario here. Teens unable to get summer jobs. Places youth were hired in that past are hiring newcomer adults. Why are newcomer adults needing to work in these jobs? Why not better paying jobs? Why not fulltime jobs that can support families?

This has been a problem with us in Michigan too. Our town made a commitment to hiring kids. Finding new jobs kids could do that wasn’t burdensome to the business owner. But a lot of the reservations with hiring kids was the money and time spent in training for them to leave after a few months.

(1) My 7-11 is owned and run by immigrants. In my 56 years of visiting road stops, gas stations, bodegas, and party stores (big thing in Michigan), it is THE cleanest convenience store I have ever been in, not to mention always fully stocked with fresh products.

I know a mom who went with her husband to his roofing job in the hot Texas sun every day. She was paid $5 an hour to pick up all the trash the roofers would throw on the ground and put it in the dumpster. This was still a better job than she could’ve had in El Salvador, hard-working people.

Re. field workers. Have you ever seen a porta-potty out there? Inadequate drinking water. Spiders, snakes, hot sun. I've talked to folk who picked. They're tough, a lot of them grew up on farms. They'd laugh at us trying to do this work, but then help. They're GOOD people with strong work ethics.
