Members of the Texas legislature are paid $7,000 a year. It’s not realistic to think they’d be able to leave their day jobs and families in perpetuity.

Correct. They got (imo) the best possible win they could while still being able to provide for themselves. They were never going to be able to hold out indefinitely, but they put a national spotlight on what was going on. But it def caused Newsom to get a plan in action to counteract it.
