My high ranking of Washington is less to do with the generalship and more to do with stepping down after two terms and his work at the Constitutional Convention (obviously that’s pre-presidency, but you don’t have a Constitution without it).
Yohannanx (@yohannanx.bsky.social) reply parent
“It says Romneycare on the Wikipedia page, so clearly it was his idea.” If only you had read the article, you’d have seen the discussion of the legislative history where he vetoed most of the bill and it was passed over his objections.

Technically the ACA was one of those annual budget bills as well! The House deemed the Senate version passed when they voted on a related measure that contained the budget provisions.

IRA was a budget bill.

In what way did he “institute” it? He opposed the bill and it was passed over his veto.
Yohannanx (@yohannanx.bsky.social) reply parent
Also, none of what he said is true. The only commonality between ACA/MA Connector and the Heritage plan is that both had an individual mandate and the MA plan was passed by a Democratic legislature over Romney’s veto.

There probably is a lesson in the fact that Obama shepherded the most left-wing piece of federal legislation since the Great Society, over opposition in and outside his own party, and is chiefly remembered by the left now as a do-nothing moderate.

I do think it’s actually a problem that the pandemic seems to have permanently lowered the potential of an entire cohort. The problem is all the evidence suggests it’s the pandemic that caused it, not our response being too aggressive.

That would cost money though, so can’t do that.

Yohannanx (@yohannanx.bsky.social) reply parent
Part of the problem here though is that most of the “real harm” came from the virus itself, not the policy response. Places that rushed to reopen schools didn’t have better outcomes.
