I think this is true to a degree, but also gets easily weaponized by conservatives claiming it’s why they turned against public health recommendations they had already been protesting against for months.

Sure conservatives could weaponize anything but I think this made a lot of normal people incredulous about the whole thing; they felt like they had followed a bunch of mostly meaningless rules for months

And not just "normal people" — the fact that the formal medical apparatus of the country held on to the fomites messaging for as long as it did is a cautionary tale for those of us who pride themselves on being well informed. Sometimes the first call in a crisis is flat out wrong.
