I believe it’s kind of a Both/And situation, and has been ever since his 1st administration. The only reason there seemed to be some order to that first one was the more-established government hands in that White House. 1/3

Trump acts on impulse & is demented, but like a simple animal, he also has strong instincts that serve him well on a basic survival basis. Trump understands just enough of the authoritarian playbook to thrust and stumble in its direction, even if it’s haphazard. 2/3

He’s definitely trying to become a full on dictator, while also stage-managing the news cycle to try to “blast the zone with bullshit” enough to cover for his criminality and incompetency. It’s both/and.
