A former Cathedral City police sergeant who was demoted after being accused of using his access to help a political candidate is now suing the city, asking a judge to undo the punishment. The city demoted Corwin De Veas from sergeant to officer in late 2023, saying he improperly used his police credentials to search the criminal records of a city council candidate who was running against De Veas' friend, Councilmember Ernesto Gutierrez, in 2022. De Veas appealed the decision to no avail. The city denied his appeal in October 2024 after an arbitrator upheld his demotion. He has since left the police department under circumstances neither would comment on, and it's unclear whether he could resume working for the city if he prevails in his lawsuit.
