I am usually the first to defend universities, but the R1 designation is for research, not language instruction. You could have an entire R1 solely devoted to hard sciences. On a cultural level, we need to be doing a LOT more language instruction in K-12

I can see where it would be useful, but you could be a chemist at a lab in London or DC for 30 years and never have a need to speak or read anything but English, right? Or is there something I am missing? Also - not just trying to be contrarian; I am genuinely curious.
