While comment sessions can turn into giant messes, cutting off comments completely frustrates the heck out of those who may AGREE with you. My sympathy dips right DOWN, when I find that someone has shut off all comments. Frustrating your potential or actual allies is counter-productive.

More and more I find that politics-related posts are turning off all comments. It's not the same as blocking (where a blocked person cannot reach the post in the first place) but a smack in the face to interested and agreeable parties who might be valuable supporters.

I have to respectfully disagree. Any political post that's likely to draw comments will probably draw abusive people the OP hasn't blocked yet. Some people want to say their piece without inviting direct hate, and I think that's their right. If I agree, I can like/reblog the post and move on.

You can block abusive people (one time cost) but you can’t rebuild engagement if you never allow it in the first place. And it isn’t even about echo chambers.. it’s “social” media, not “broadcast” media unless that’s the model you’re choosing.. 🤷🏾
