My eyes first fell on "James Dean-like" and so my assumption on starting to read the quote was this was going to be a complaint about GDT totally misunderstanding James Dean.

Read it three times, thanks. My annoyance is with how sentimental (and unscary) Del Toro’s forays into horror are, and it feels like this source material is triggering all his worst impulses.
