I have a daughter but I immediately hate and distrust any dude who calls himself a “girl dad.” It’s a term that is almost always deployed as a shield. bsky.app/profile/defe...

It's similar to when a man says, "I'm opposed to sexual assault because I have a wife (or a daughter)." So if he was single with no kids, sexual assault is cool with him? How about "sexual assault is bad, period."

I'm sure he's got "black friends," too.

Kind of like saying I’m a good person. Only someone else can really say that about you.

I have a daughter as well, and I never used the term. Feel the same as you, Craig.

My favorite use was by Nate Tibbetts, when he was hired to coach the Phoenix Mercury. He had extensive NBA coaching experience, but never coached women’s basketball on any level before getting a WNBA job. He’s turned out well, but players & fans will call him “Girl Dad” until the end of time.

Jason Fry's comment here gets it right. The reason it's disgusting is it relies on the assumption that the natural state for men is being terrible, but when they have daughters they are transformed--by, and only by, those daughters--into caring, contributing members of society.

But if he was a boy Dad it'd of been completely acceptable lol. Yeah he can just say he's a Dad and apologize for his actions.

The converse is usually true as well. “Boy mom” is usually applied to the woman explaining to reporters how hard it is for boys in this country, and her son would never do those awful things he’s been accused of.

Watching the video he appears to apologize more to her dad than the girl herself. I'm a WVU alum and hate that he represents my university.

Agreed, and the dad's statement was cringe AF too, basically fluffing dude for actually apologizing. Also interesting non-response he gave when asked whether there as a financial component to this whole "apology"
