There's an apartment building a few blocks south of me on the site of what once was a slaughterhouse. I feel like filing a complaint about how that detracts from the historic nature of the neighborhood and demand that the slaughterhouse be put back.

The neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places and, sure, there are a lot of things you gotta do here to keep it that way. But fuck off if you're mad that accessibility might reduce your cottage's quaintness quotient by 1.3%

My cute historical neighborhood really pisses me off sometimes. The lawsuit here is to stop construction of wheelchair ramps in sidewalks because they're not made with "historically appropriate" materials. As if there were wheelchair ramps in the 19th century. www.dispatch.com/story/news/c...

I will say that one thing that kept me watching it was learning that Morgan Spector, who plays a Vanderbilt-like robber-baron, is a pro-Palestine member of DSA. The way he chews up all of the awful shit his character does is all the more fantastic when you know where he's coming from.

Donald Trump is a murderer who belongs in the dock at The Hague. Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Shumer would probably like to find a bipartisan solution to that problem which serves the pocketbook of the middle class or whatever the fuck, but maybe they should just say, plainly, that he's a murderer.

Jeffries spends 95% of his time listening to consultants who decided, in 1997, that the word "bipartisan" is some sort of talisman that ensures political success, but to say such a thing when the wheels are coming off and the engine is on fire is the most out-of-touch thing imaginable. Fuck him.

In today's newsletter: my thoughts on Labor Day. Also: an inside-the-parker, a fireballer gets an extension, Buehler released, how Trump being alive doesn't "own the libs," old-timey stuff, and a Buckeyes tattoo. www.cupofcoffeenews.com/cup-of-coffe...

Happy Labor Day: America’s most overlooked major holiday. It’s understandable why so many people view Labor Day as not much more than day off from work and an excuse to have a cookout. Generally speaking Labor Day is a reflective holiday, not a celebratory one, and if a holiday doesn’t involve gifts, celebrations or specific, defined acts like putting flowers on a grave, people tend to have a hard time knowing what to do about it. However it’s also overlooked by political design. Indeed, the obliteration and demonization of the labor movement is one of the most successful political operations of the past 50 years. The major components of this operation have been the wholesale scaling back of workers’ rights, the elimination of worker benefits and protections, and the claiming of a an ever-greater cut of revenues by ownership over the past several decades. It’s worth noting, however, that obliterating the very history of the labor movement in the United States has been a key part of that itself. Even most of those who stop for a moment to acknowledge Labor Day are likely unaware that its institution was something of a cynical, political act, taken by politicians and business owners in order to appease workers they had just murdered and brutalized. It was intentionally established in September to separate it from the larger international workers’ day of May 1 and to thus cut off American's participation in the global labor movement. The holiday itself was something of an apology, but it was also a means of blunting the edge of the labor movement. Those who see workers as the enemy as opposed to a critical part of the American fabric are quite happy that most of us think of today as a day to fire up the grill and go to the pool as opposed to thinking about America’s workers. They have made it a point to do that, in fact, and they have been wildly successful in doing so. Organized labor makes up a smaller portion of the workforce than it did for most of the 20th Century and workers suffer in worse conditions than they have in decades. Sharply worse in industries which the Trump regime has sought to decimate and/or deregulate. Even pointing out these various obvious facts has come to be seen as subversive and even a great many of the people who do the working in this country have bought in to the notion — propagated by those who profit from labor — that unions are tools of the communists and giving any lip service to the rights of workers is a suspect and even un-American pursuit. Good, secure jobs with good pay and benefits have come to be seen as rare luxuries for which it is rude to ask, let alone expect. What’s worse: many workers themselves have adopted the language of the rich and powerful in this regard, having been convinced that their need to hustle harder than they used to in order to make less in real dollars than they used to is somehow a good thing. I’m not sure what to do about that, as it’s a massive problem with many causes and calls for a host of actions in response to remedy it. But in the meantime, we should do whatever we can to at least commemorate and acknowledge a national holiday devoted to laborers in at least close to the same way in which we celebrate mothers on Mothers Day, fathers on Fathers Day, our loved ones on Valentine’s Day, our veterans on Veterans Day and those who have died for our country on Memorial Day. And make no mistake: workers have died for our country too. People die on the job every day. You likely cross a bridge, enter a building or drive on a road that was paid for, in part, by workers’ lives every day. People have died in the name of worker’s rights and in the name of keeping more people from dying on the job. But labor built this country and the labor movement has saved lives that would have been lost and has elevated the standard of living of families. For most of us, labor and workers in our own families allowed us to get where we are now. Even if some people who should know better act as if that weren't true. Labor Day is a day worthy of remembrance, reverence and reflection. Maybe one day our country will acknowledge that beyond what it means for backyard barbecues.

You know what’s the first thing I do when I get up in the morning? I put on my glasses. Then I pee. Then I make coffee. Then I read Craig’s newsletter. Sometimes I change up the order. That’s my endorsement.

I know lots of us are at maximum subscription capacity, but I can’t recommend Craig’s indispensable baseball newsletter enough. Smart, thoughtful and funny and populated by a terrific community of glorious dorks like me

A lot of the health stuff the regime is doing is fueled by RFK's eugenicist mindset, but I bet a good bit of it is fueled by the elimination of standards which litigants can cite in lawsuits. bsky.app/profile/kare...

MLB will schedule ten day games on Labor Day to take advantage of people who are off work but they won't do a special hat or even acknowledge Labor Day as an actual holiday.

So I've decided to do a subscription sale for the home stretch, with 25% off the annual price. I'm calling it the "Home Stretch 25% off Subscription Sale." My refusal to read even a single marketing book saves you money!!! www.cupofcoffeenews.com/the-home-str...

Yeah, I've been aware of that for a little bit. Even if that's just a tiny part of a publication's subscriptions, it's indicative of an overall ethos there where Substack is trying to capture writers' audiences for itself in a host of ways.

I understand that. The point is that our institutions play an important role in pushing back against our insane, fascist president, yet none of them wanna do so. This provides an easy opportunity for one of them -- professional sports -- to say, simply, that Trump is wrong. But Rob Manfred won't!

I dunno. That's what he said. If it's nonsense Manfred should be able to easily refute it.

Right, but only Manfred is in the position to say so! I'd like him to say so! A big reason we're sorta fucked right now is that leaders of institutions won't do the slightest thing to push back against Trump. Not even denying something easily deniable!
