There's an apartment building a few blocks south of me on the site of what once was a slaughterhouse. I feel like filing a complaint about how that detracts from the historic nature of the neighborhood and demand that the slaughterhouse be put back.
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't really know because I'm not a joiner and I've never been to the meetings. Probably some of those. Mostly Boomer and elder Gen-X retirees with money who care more than absolutely anything about real estate values.

You'll be shocked to learn that the GV folks spend a lot of time getting mad over parking, which is very important to them! bsky.app/profile/chri...

They want the ramps and sidewalks to be made out of brick.
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social) reply parent
The neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places and, sure, there are a lot of things you gotta do here to keep it that way. But fuck off if you're mad that accessibility might reduce your cottage's quaintness quotient by 1.3%
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social)
My cute historical neighborhood really pisses me off sometimes. The lawsuit here is to stop construction of wheelchair ramps in sidewalks because they're not made with "historically appropriate" materials. As if there were wheelchair ramps in the 19th century. www.dispatch.com/story/news/c...

I will say that one thing that kept me watching it was learning that Morgan Spector, who plays a Vanderbilt-like robber-baron, is a pro-Palestine member of DSA. The way he chews up all of the awful shit his character does is all the more fantastic when you know where he's coming from.
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social) reply parent
There would be a LOT. In their defense, they aren't trying to be super historically accurate -- lots of composite characters and events -- but it touches enough real stuff to be annoying.
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social) reply parent
Just try it sometime! Wife: "Should we get Italian or Chinese tonight?" Me, in the Nathan Lane from The Gilded Age voice: "Why, theah are many VAHRIABLES we must conSIDUH before making such a MOMENTOUS decision . . . "
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social)
I'm not proud that I watched "The Gilded Age," but I am going to laugh for the rest of my life saying things to myself in whatever the hell that voice that Nathan Lane uses. It's one of the few things that has made me laugh in months.
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social)
Donald Trump is a murderer who belongs in the dock at The Hague. Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Shumer would probably like to find a bipartisan solution to that problem which serves the pocketbook of the middle class or whatever the fuck, but maybe they should just say, plainly, that he's a murderer.

I know, I know, but: The president of the US saying, literally, "we're going in" in reference to sending the military to an American city for no reason beyond terrorizing the local population should be the most immediately impeachable shit imaginable

Hey @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social: you said this three days ago. And now today you want to find bipartisan solutions with them? Why should any person take you fucking seriously? bsky.app/profile/hake...
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social) reply parent
Jeffries spends 95% of his time listening to consultants who decided, in 1997, that the word "bipartisan" is some sort of talisman that ensures political success, but to say such a thing when the wheels are coming off and the engine is on fire is the most out-of-touch thing imaginable. Fuck him.

It's always been harder to maintain democracy than it is to impose authoritarianism, but it's impossible to do so when those charged with defending democracy don't seem to fucking care.
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social)
We're in an existential battle for the Constitutional order, and we're losing it, badly. Yet the general putatively in charge of that battle likes to talk about how we need to find common ground and resume business-as-usual with the hostile forces trying to kill us. Fucking unreal.

Trump being late to his own proof-of-life presser is probably due to the fact that someone in his inner circle appreciates how fucking weak it is for a sitting president to have to do such a thing. Or because he's dead. I dunno.

Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social) reply parent
I understand that. The point is that our institutions play an important role in pushing back against our insane, fascist president, yet none of them wanna do so. This provides an easy opportunity for one of them -- professional sports -- to say, simply, that Trump is wrong. But Rob Manfred won't!
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social) reply parent
I dunno. That's what he said. If it's nonsense Manfred should be able to easily refute it.

Then Manfred should say so!
Craig Calcaterra (@craigcalcaterra.bsky.social) reply parent
Right, but only Manfred is in the position to say so! I'd like him to say so! A big reason we're sorta fucked right now is that leaders of institutions won't do the slightest thing to push back against Trump. Not even denying something easily deniable!
