Newsom has been elected to state wide office in CA 4 times. Love him or hate him, he's been a nationally known figure for years. There is no comparison to Avenatti.
As a former SF resident, I've seen this Newsom for 30+ years. He was always positioning himself for this moment. Big difference now is that he no longer has the backing of Getty family (and that he pandered to the right re: trans and unhoused).
Not all-in, just happy a Dem might be effective and is saying what the rest of them should be. He shouldn't even be in current discourse but due to the HUGE vacuum of Dem leadership, here we are!
I think the relative “excitement” around Newsom is less about him, and more about the complete lack of anything resembling opposition from the entire Democratic Party

Bill, I respect where you’re coming from, but there are a lot of professional “liberal” opinion people or talking heads who have been hyping up Newsom for awhile as some sort of front-runner. In that context, along with everything older than a few weeks, it’s ridiculous some of the verbiage used.
If someone is excited about Newsom now, but hasn’t been hyping up Pritzker for the last year, that tells you something. If someone is saying Newsom 2028 but has never been Pritzker 2028, that tells you something. Not saying Pritzker’s the guy, but been consistent, and he’s a major state governor.
His comment was about people who say they are all-in on Newsom. It was going on last year, it was going on when he courted conservative voices and promoted second-class citizenship for trans people, and it’s going on now when messaging is better. Weird to be all-in on anyone in 2025, but Newsom?
I'm happy to see him, or anyone else, punching back too. But that doesn't make him a good presidential contender. To think he is one requires one to forget literally everything he's done up until three weeks ago. I'm focusing my criticism on those who think he's a strong presidential contender.

I’m not a Newsom fan. But I’m looking for a leader w/ some piss&vinegar @ this point bc Jeffries & Schumer & most of the Dem Sens are milquetoast. We need a few who are willing to throw grenades. This country is devolving into an authoritarian hellhole & I don’t want to go quietly into that night.
And folks that reject governor of California actively battling gerrymandering because Newsom is often cynical and bad on important issues remind me of the people in PA or MI who vote 3rd party, then complain about GOP. At least act like you understand binary, representative electoral systems, kidz.

Newsom was a good mayor of SF. As guv, he’s adequate, meh but in an acceptable way. POTUS material? Ha. He must be surrounded by yes-men who keep whistling Hail to the Chief in his presence. A 30 sec clip of dystopian homeless camps sinks him immed. He tops out at 6th place in Iowa
