Because I chose a Democratic ballot in the last primary, I couldn’t vote in these races: State Rep, Sheriff, prosecutor, assessor, commissioner, coroner, collector, or surveyor. There were no Democrats running in any of those races.

For me, Sheriff, prosecutor, county clerk, recorder, drain commissioner.
Same in Ohio
Can you get a Non-Partisan ballot?
It is ridiculous that these roles are politically aligned. This politicises roles that should be impartial. Also, most voters don't have the experience & knowledge required to critically assess the candidates against role competencies. These roles should not be voted for.
Wow
You must live in Florida.
I choose a Republican ballot in my state do I could vote against the worst trash!
Same
Most people think of WA state as blue, but there are many rural pockets of MAGA red where candidates pretty much always run as Republican. Dems candidates don’t want to invest their money in a loss.
Do you have a municipal and county Democratic Party executive committee in your area? I feel like it should be the job of the party to seek the best candidates for their respective elections.
Our state needs a more active Democratic Party.
Ie We need more active Democrats and voters. There is no top down solution
My friends in FL were advised to register as Republicans specifically so they could vote in primary elections to try and blunt the impact of the craziest of MAGAts. But also: Dems cannot continue to leave NO one running in these races.
I’m going to guess this is going to feel like a Sisyphean cause at times. Please don’t give up. Dems know what they have to do, but if they say it once, and nobody does anything, they shrug and go on to other things. I appreciate your ability to focus.
How can we convince democrats to run in these counties? Most of them are too terrified of their neighbors waving trump flags.
Ditto!
This is very important and I’m glad you continue to draw attention to this problem. People need to know and they just don’t
As a number of people have been suggesting, this kind of situation is a recipe for failure for Democrats. We may not be able to develop a social media/news/podcast/radio infrastructure equal to Republicans at this point, but we certainly can do better, …
and we can and should have community centers, with year round community people working across every state in the country, providing accurate information on political and related matters and helpful assistance where possible.
And of course we’ll need people to run for something!
WTF? That is voter suppression.
Over 1/3 of state legislative seats were uncontested in the last election. This is a recurrent national trend that cuts both ways. It seems a little effort might go a long way.
Most countries don’t elect prosecutors or police or coroners. They’re appointed based on career achievements.
so frustrating for you and all of us. I may be wrong but I blame the national party with Harrison at the helm for this starvation of local races.
#payattentionDEMS #voting
Same here in Western Illinois.
Ugh
I got a Republican ballot so I could vote against Ashcroft.
I usually pull a Republican ballot but I needed to vote for Crystal.
When I lived in San Diego, I registered Republican for that very reason. We need open primaries with some variant of approval voting. First-past-the-post is c**p. RCV is barely better and subject to gaming that is much harder with approval voting.
MO voters banned any kind of voting other than FPTP this year thanks to misleading language from R senators and no meaningful resistance. Unfortunately we are now locked into this shitty system by our constitution.
😢 Sorry. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNLU...
Ditto, but add no Dem running for congressional rep in my rural Illinois district.
That's f'ing sad. 😢
It’s the same in the corrupt county in Arkansas that I live in. I’ve tried telling candidates that they have to run as a candidate in a different party for anyone other than Republicans to be able to vote for them but they can’t seem to comprehend it.
I didn’t vote in a primary this year but it was still the same outcome. People can’t understand why the same corrupt sheriff keeps winning and it’s because nobody challenges him outside of his party.
That is extremely sad. We need candidates in all races, even if their chances are slim. All politics are local; that’s where politicians get started, and that drives up-ballot votes.
We need them even if their chances are 0. Running makes a difference for future organizing and for up ballot races.
Dems need to get OUT THERE now and not just at Election Time.
😭😭😭😭
I had the same exact issue and it's why I'm now gearing up to run for office against some of these Republicans. I just moved last year so I'm just now eligible. We need more people to run - normal people. Not career politicians! State legislature, here I come.
I live in a conservative small town in a conservative county in a conservative state. The best I can usually hope for is finding the least maga candidate.
😪
Unbelievable. Those are front line positions.
Cue think piece on “Why Dems Are in Disarray.” Sick of this whole system.
My rual county is slightly more dem then rep for state/national elections. But as far as local goes we often see Republicans running uncontested. I just don't fill in that spot. I just can't bring myself to do it.
Same in Oklahoma. Some of these should not BE partisan races in the first place.
Same in Wyoming! I can vote for maybe 2 races if I am listed as democratic in the primary.
Curious. How much does it cost to run? I’m under the impression that it’s very expensive.
You mean personal expenses? It is up to the candidate but you could run a first time race for state rep with little personal financial investment and lots of time invested. But in reality I think most candidates in small races put a few hundred to a few thousand of personal money into it.
Final campaign expenses for a state rep race are anywhere from $10-100k depending on how competitive the race is. There is a reason that most candidates are either retired, business owners, or work jobs where they make their own hours.
You can’t be a regular, full-time employee and run a competitive race very easily. Even small time politics is not a working man’s game. It takes retirement, savings, or a supportive partner.
Thank you. This is helpful.
