If you go with religion, then the bible claims that life begins after the husk already exists, when god breathes life into it. Genesis 2:7 "And the lord god formed man of the dust of the ground, and BREATHED INTO HIS NOSTRILS THE BREATH OF LIFE; and man became a living soul."

While a baby is connected to its mother via umbilical cord, it does not breathe. So if the "breath of life" is required, an unborn foetus CAN NOT receive the breath of life because it has no respiration. Therefore an unborn foetus CAN NOT be alive before it is born and the umbilical cord is severed.

The bible itself provides instructions on how to conduct abortions, and normalizes their use. Numbers 5:27 "[...] When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse."

The bible is also full of normalization of the concept of "doing bad things for the greater good". Just take Jesus. Something abhorrent was forced onto him without his consent - for the greater good, for all of humanity. And this is only one of many stories & normalizations in the bible like that.

So by definition in the bible, doing bad things for a good/better/more desirable result is totally justifiable. On the other hand, if you base your moral and ethical principles on non-religious authority, then humanism and science are the authorities to consult about matters like this.
