I’m so confused by the folks who said that raising the minimum wage would increase the price of every day goods while also being okay with tariffs raising the price of every day goods… I reckon they are okay paying higher prices as long as it doesn’t help anyone making a minimum wage.

It's funny how the prices of goods doesn't vary as much as critics said it would if people got paid *almost* a living wage. Take CO (my home) vs WY (our neighbors) - people earn TWICE as much in CO but the cost of living is only 5% higher here. You don't want to be poor in Wyoming vs Colorado.

There's a ton more useful context in the American Communities Project County-types map of the US (something I use for work) This somewhat contextualizes why the Midwest and West differ in cost of living.

Just to clarify: I'vedone land-use studies and historic/archaeological research. Thurston County is very much a residential suburb of northern counties on Puget Sound but the State Capital is here, and two four year colleges. Slapping the label of "military base"casts doubt on the whole map.

may 1, 2025, 9:52 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Marc Maxmeister @marcmaxmeister.bsky.social

Those counties were not assigned labels based on some person's opinion, but as a result of clustering model using 36 socioeconomic county-level indicators. The presence of a base is not definitive, but part of the overall pattern that determines how that economy behaves in others things.

may 2, 2025, 6:51 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Marc Maxmeister @marcmaxmeister.bsky.social

I didn't build the model but I found it to be somewhat useful as a proxy for combining dozens of factors in other analyses. Look up the American Communities Project and you'll find their methods are well documented.

Julia @jesrcerulean.bsky.social

I know which county would shut down completely if 47 decides to demilitarize JBLM: not Thurston. I'm aware of the dangers of chosing the wrong indicators to plug in to a clustering model, and the further west you go on that map the worse it gets; possibly because the west has bigger counties.

Adding to the conservative conceptual craziness… That minimum wage gets paid to them and their families and gets spent into their communities… while the tariff gets paid to the govt, removed from their communities, and handed to oligarchs as more play money for their financial casino games.

Truthfully, a minimum wage has never been the way to go. That’s not how Europe does it. There should be associations with collective bargaining across an industry not at individual companies. Minimum wage being a specific number really doesn't make sense, given the variation in local economies. It should be a formula, based on 3-4x the local real estate market (median rent of a 2BR apartment, say) to start with and then indexed to inflation. The only question is how to define "local".

Yes, it's quite common for concerns relating to the ethical issue of the distribution of economic power or more generally resolution of interpersonal conflicts of preferences as over resources in markets, to be expressed inaptly as positive issues that are then ignored in other contexts.

may 1, 2025, 4:34 pm • 2 0 • view
avatar
Hansel Krankepantzen @krankepantzen.bsky.social

It's why the popular conversation about economic issues often seems so unreal and unserious. People are loath to say they hate the poor, explain why they want them to suffer, because they don't know how to talk about philosophy, ethics, so instead they talk about random positive issues as stand-ins.

may 1, 2025, 4:36 pm • 2 0 • view
avatar
Hansel Krankepantzen @krankepantzen.bsky.social

But then, of course, later it doesn't seem to make sense. For example, people will rail all day long against deficit spending to help the poor, but they'll gladly support tax cuts to the rich having an equal or greater effect on deficits. It's got nothing really to do with deficits, per se.

may 1, 2025, 4:38 pm • 6 0 • view
avatar
Hansel Krankepantzen @krankepantzen.bsky.social

One supposes it's the result of the ethical-half theory of neoclassical welfare economics famously excluding consideration of interpersonal ethics, so many, following the interpretation in bad economics in the conservative style, take that to mean one cannot discuss the ethical issues involved.

may 1, 2025, 4:40 pm • 2 0 • view
avatar
Hansel Krankepantzen @krankepantzen.bsky.social

Many take that to mean, or understand others take that to mean, economics is an "ethics free zone," so of course when they have ethical concerns relating to economics, economic power, allocation of resources, as everyone does, they seek indirect but inapt ways to express them #ethics #EconSky

I think it comes down to whom they think deserves it. In their minds, paying tariffs restores manufacturing jobs, which in the minds of public memory are white jobs. Raising the minimum wage threatens small businesses, in their heads.

sjoyner1965.bsky.social @sjoyner1965.bsky.social

I’ve had conversations and it genuinely comes down to the belief that raising the minimum wage would destroy mom-and-pop stores. I’ve had a coworker complain about housing costs, and when I said the state senate passed a minimum wage increase, he was like “that will cause this store to go under.”

sjoyner1965.bsky.social @sjoyner1965.bsky.social

I mean, it did go under, but that was likely due to the owner deciding to open another store despite being $40k in debt, and them complaining about having a revolving door of employees even though the owner’s mom would literally complain about minimum wage increases IN FRONT of said employees.

ColoradoPerls @adanforth.bsky.social

For sure. I’m just saying there also needs to be regulations or laws to prevent this. There is no reason for CEOs to make 100s of times the salaries of their employees. Without the employees doing the actual work, the company would fail.

That’s true but people don’t like laws. You know how they scream “freedom”.I suggest that there needs to be pressure by the workers, unions and shareholders to change this.Workers are huge shareholders through pensions.

Trump told them they wouldn't have to pay income taxes. Those voters have a deep-seated hatred of income taxes for some reason. They don't understand math well enough to understand that sales/consumption tax (tariffs) is regressive, meaning they would pay a higher rate than rich people.

Mr. Herbert Garrison @dropthet.bsky.social

Well, the problem is that 37% of Americans eat fast food on any given day. So for a huge % of the country, fast food is any everyday good. The single best thing any politician could do to attract non-voters is to promise to lower fast food menu prices & "bring back the real dollar menu!!!"

Mr. Herbert Garrison @dropthet.bsky.social

That's right... The plans are for the political diehards. Someone with a 3rd grade reading capacity & a complete inability to use numbers in any way (approx 20-25% of the adult population), they wouldn't be able to understand a plan anyway. The people around Trump figured these things out.

He is stupid, and stupid people love him. The intelligent people are using that to their advantage. I think that's why the Democrats haven't really pushed impeachment. The man baby would continue the plan and so would the speaker or that Vougt dude from P25 would install another puppet as vp.

Mr. Herbert Garrison @dropthet.bsky.social

A lot of "political expert" types on the internet never grasped that part of Trump's appeal. He may himself like fast food, but what he shows of that on TV is all an act to attract those non-voters. They think he must be just like him, eating the same stuff they do.
