And they *still* tried to block the will of the people after we voted for the Medicaid expansion! I was working in a union deli during COVID with zero health insurance and couldn't afford the marketplace bullshit working part-time at $13-15/hr.

As a European, I simply can't understand why you don't have public and free healthcare everywhere for everyone. 4 years ago, I underwent a small surgery that became slightly bigger. I paid 10€ because I wanted to sleep in a single bedroom. In a double one it would have been 100% free.

Still. Paying 500 is mental. It does not cost that much for healthcare. Period. Norway spend 10% of GDP on healthcare. The US gov 21%. And still you have such prices to pay pr month?! It would be so much cheaper to give everyone free healthcare and form public hospitals. Cheaper for everyone.

9-years ago I tried to go the same route, couldn't afford the policy, so I went uninsured had a full on heart attack, I learned the weirdest thing. Because I wasn't a US citizen, I obviously wasn't Medicaid eligible but as a non-citizen could negotiate on price but that it was illegal for citizens.

may 22, 2025, 1:31 am • 13 1 • view

Mark Cathcart @markcathcart.com

It allowed me to come out on top... It was cheaper to have a heart attack and negotiate than it was to buy insurance to cover the hospital fees. Totally mad.

avatar
K (she/her/dr) @kkinsf.bsky.social

Fun fact. Citizens can get a break, too. If you're unable to pay the hospital will negotiate with you. They sometimes understand something is better than nothing. A grad school friend who is a US citizen had a medical issue they couldn't afford during grad school. The hospital settled for 10%.

Interestingly I was told that once you were a citizen it was illegal under the state Medicaid laws to do this. you are in essence forced through Medicaid and go through the spend down process which in essence strips you of your assets when you get sick .

Again, splitting hairs. These private companies have a contract with Medicare to provide the additional services, like vision, dental, and hearing, and prescription drug coverage that Medicare doesn't cover, plus the 20 % of total billing that parts A and B would not cover.

Piper For Missouri Posted by Jessica Piper 1m • I don't qualify for Medicaid, but I am self- employed. I tried to find health insurance through the marketplace a few years ago, but it was unaffordable for me. About $1200 a month. I looked again last year and the same policy was $500. Do you know why? Because we forced Missouri Republicans to expand Medicaid. Medicaid helps everyone.

Here in Louisiana, a state with the one of the highest rates of poverty and they tend to vote republican, which i see as being self-destructive, Jindal refused expanded medicaid while he drove the state even further into poverty. Then Edwards got in one of the first things he did was expand it.

Medicaid’s role as a cost-control measure cannot be stressed enough and needs to be the primary message from those defending it to counteract the right wing’s focus on it being a “hand-out” to the poor. Only way to get the middle class to understand why this program is so essential.

Jess, the state Medicaid plans are based on the poverty level, and which category you fall in, like LIF = low income, ABD = aged, blind or disabled. LIF could be determined by how many underaged children you support in your household. But a healthy adult able to work would not be covered.

may 22, 2025, 7:39 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
jwestsc.bsky.social @jwestsc.bsky.social

No, not everyone. Each state could be the same, but my state has categories for recipients to qualify for Medicaid coverage. Depends on how many are in your family, your income at poverty level. Then you could qualify for LIF= Low income family.ABD =Aged, Blind, Disabled. Or pregnant women/poverty

If they truly wanted to save money they would get universal health care which would be 80% cheaper that our current system cause it gets rid of big pharma

We absolutely should have universal insurance but there are a lot of other costs that make health care high than pharma

The only way it'll happen is for the givt to mandate every employer provide every employee with Healthcare. We'd have universal Healthcare in days

After having an Angioplasty with Stent. 2002. Free I approached a Private Medical insurance company in Ireland. Just in case I would need immediate health cover. With my history. They quoted €5000 for 5 years. Providing I didn't claim. I was in full-time employment in Heavy Industry. 🇮🇪🇪🇺
