My own son serves. We were teachers and we couldn’t afford to send him to college. So he carries a gun for the US Army in exchange for an education.

A friend of mine knew he wouldn't get a job in the field we studied, so he joined the Army so they'd pay off his student loans. That was 20 years ago. He spent time in Iraq, but fortunately he was in one of the better areas of the country while he was there.
I hope he is in a “safe” place. You and your soldier son are in this retired teacher’s thoughts.
Kudos for him utilizing it, Tuition Assistance is legit free money, assuming his CO or unit gives him the time to do it while he's in.
Community college anyone? You don’t have to join the army. My mom worked at a factory and I didn’t need to go to the army for an education. Bad argument.
Meanwhile, we send almost $4 billion in military aid to Israel year after year. Israel. Where college tuitions and healthcare are HEAVILY subsidized by the govt. Our politicians would rather enrich themselves by helping Israel commit genocide instead of helping Americans have a better life.
Wait you saying doge didn't cancel the aid to Israel?
Funny how Elon missed such a huge number on the spreadsheet. He could've spared deleting so many other line items instead. But apparently, it's "Israel First".
Shameful
We are all very grateful for you sons service and wish the commander in chief was worthy of the title. 🙏🇺🇸
2 of my 3 sons got their college educations (and, in 1 case, an advanced degree) via the military. 1 son is still serving as a Lt. Col; the other did his 4 years and got out. Much of America has no clue about the realities of military life & the effects on the families.
I’ve been thinking about your post re. the “USA” map…I live in San Diego & 40% of the county voted for the 🍊 tyrant! I was like 😳. It’s a nationwide problem (not red/blue). I think our only way out of this is to increase the # of reps in the house (<1,200)— outcomes are better when with more voices.
So did I, and then got my M.S. and a decent life without debt. It can be done!
I did the same....but i knew from the days of Vietnam i was going to serve. There were 5 military members in my immediate family.....and we call it a weapon because it has the power to take lives.
I appreciate when you post these reminders. I hate that we have gotten to the point where we talk red state and blue state so much. There are lore republicans in California and more democrats in Texas than many other states combined.
Thank you for your support of his service. This is a challenging time for all of us who served and those who continue to serve. I appreciate his courage. I appreciate your commitment.
May he stay safe. 🙏💗🙏
Mine too. Turns 21 July 7.
"So he carries a gun for the US Army in exchange for an education." I'm sure you're aware of this, but I think it still needs to be explicitly said. This is a damning indictment of the American system.
Damn straight. It was the same for me and many others.
Our other son had his head beaten in for five years playing football on scholarship. Yes, this is an indictment on the funding we stripped from higher education over the decades.
It's going to get much worse
This is an indictment on how the people at the top of the food chain use their money and power to influence congress to shit on the people that make this country great.
I am so thankful we were able to move to MN where kids have the possibility to get a state funded associates degree. I hope with everything that I have that we are able to keep this up. College should be free for every child across the nation.
CT started that too. It's awesome.
As a former k12 and college professor...yes.
What is this crap? Tim Walz fault! 😜
I LOVE WALZ! He takes so much crap from the constituents who have benefited the most from the legislation passed by Dems. None of them realize how expensive it is to live in a red state and not get any benefits in return. It’s infuriating that 48% of the people want to shout themselves in the foot.
*shoot* not shout
Yep
Yes. It is.
There are many indictments of the US system!
And I'm sure you can think of many similar indictments of the Canadian system. No nation state in the colonial anglosphere has much of a leg to stand on here even though the US is the most egregious example
Fascism
His service will be an asset if he goes into politics. As my Sen. Kelly says, the people who have served are less likely to support bombing than those who didn't.
Godspeed.
We’ve all been shoved into these boxes where we don’t belong, some much more than others and all since January. You’re doing an amazingly incredible job and making us aware of what goes on in your state-so grateful to your son, so proud of you, thank you!
Please thank him for his service.
My dad did this and it made life better for me and my siblings. It just shouldn't be necessary.
I’m sorry your child has to do this for an education. Nobody should have to sell their body to the gov just to be educated
I hope he's safe.
That's admirable from one perspective, but also genuinely sad. I hope he chooses well, if the time comes. I hope he comes home to you.
It is tough being blue in red places and it has to be extra hard when you are personally so invested in fighting the good fight. I'm just one little person but I see you. You inspire me & give me hope. Thank you.
It is the route out of poverty, small towns, mediocre education, and racial limitations for so many people. I did not know this until I moved to a rural area. The divisions in the country are not simple. The continued effort to make it simple doesn't help anyone.
Not to mention forced indoctrination through religion and suppressed information. I am so thankful every day that I was able to move to a blue state. Their rural areas are often very right leaning because of the previously mentioned issues
Please thank your son for his service from grandma Jen. You must be a proud mama.
