Most of society actually. Care work is real work. Child care. Elder care. Sick care. Emotional labor in almost every guise is low or unpaid and simply expected from women. Also basic executive functioning tasks and administrative tasks.

not every action people do should involve financial compensation. In fact payment for deeds is the most corrupting thing there is. And no this doesn't mean women should work for free. It means, much of the debasement of American society is due to Americans' use of money as a value system.

Which leads to the need for a basic income policy.

Paying mothers a universal basic income (UBI) would recognize and support the unpaid labor they provide, which is essential for families and society 6 8. Evidence from guaranteed income programs shows that direct cash support to mothers improves maternal and child health, reduces financial stress, and leads to better developmental outcomes for children 2 4. UBI could also give mothers more control over their lives, improve well-being, and help address poverty, especially among families with young children 4 5.

Not to mention religious sisters…

Most churches run on the unpaid labor of women? # Perplexity mEO Sources The majority of churches in the United States rely heavily on the unpaid labor of women. Studies and reports consistently show that women perform much of the essential volunteer work-such as organizing events, teaching Sunday school, preparing food, and leading ministries-without pay 1 3 6. For example, a recent survey found that 83% of women's ministry leaders are unpaid, even in large denominations like the Southern Baptist Convention 2 4. Despite their central role in church operations, women are significantly underrepresented in paid leadership positions and are often paid less than men for similar roles 5 7. This pattern reflects broader issues of gender inequality in church structures, where women's contributions are undervalued and frequently taken for granted 6

Clergy spouse for 32 years, here. I’m in a mainline Protestant denomination- it’s not just evangelicals. The only exception I’ve experienced is with our black members - they always treat me as their “First Lady” without expectation. Of course, they’d love it if I wore a hat, too.

The biggest eye-opener was being part of a "church secretaries" group online. Sooooo many women would lament how they were only paid minimum wage or they put in TONS of unpaid hours, but every last one of them would always quickly justify it as "I see it as my ministry, so it's OK." 😳

I was in charge of a committee that provided dinner to visiting priests at the rectory. A huge storm arrived. Streets flooded. Women couldn’t leave home to bring food. The pastor called me raging demanding the dinner. I suggested politely that he should order pizza. I stopped volunteering!

And what is most stomach turning, but not surprising, the UK has the suicide prevention "charity" Samaritans that exlevts female volunteers to stay on the line when sex callers call in to jerk off,not to mention wanting women to "save," men on the edge of train platforms. expret.org/2024/02/28/s...

The Samaritans as a whole give me the creeps. Their Trustpilot score is telling, including from people having volunteered there. 80% (1&2 stars combined) is a very poor testament to this "charity". I believe the govt should look into them. www.trustpilot.com/review/www.s...

P.S. and if you have daughters of any teenagers, tell them HOW to help by calling for help instead of going on their own. It's not the public's job to do what mental health services should do incl. Samaritans.

I’d say most churches. But the small church I attended had such a huge food ministry they often made the news. My neighbors’ church filled its lawn area with tiny homes for homeless students. A facility that provides emergency housing for kids removed from parents is run by a church. Etc. etc.

Absolutely. And even as outstanding as that church was, only about 20% of the members actively contributed time to the ‘good works’. I always asked, what if Christians took Christ’s commands seriously. I no longer attend and am still wondering.

These are things our government (and our taxes) should provide. We should not have to rely on charity or churches to feed, house, and medically treat people.

jodamama.bsky.social @jodamama.bsky.social

I agree. But let's admit it- government has never done a good job of it. It should be government, and we need to keep advocating for it, absolutely. My only point here is at this time in history SOME churches do amazing work despite huge challenges. A minority of them, yes.

Sara Lamie @saralamie.bsky.social

Oh absolutely! I used to volunteer at a clothing closet/soup kitchen/shelter run by the church with my memere as a kid. There is no reason churches still couldn't do those things. There will ALWAYS be a need and a space for that. But to solely rely on the charity of rich/powerful church orgs? Nah

The thing is, when I was a church-goer my friends said it should not be government, it should be churches, & I always replied that gov't must step in bc churches fail. So even at my most religious I was pro-gov't services. It's so sad - all this talk & the suffering continues. Decade after decade.

I live in France and in the Netherlands, so for me it's the other way around. Churches barely do anything because they barely exist. Maybe they'll collect clothes for a neighborhood, which is a good thing, but there already are secular organizations that do that everywhere.

jodamama.bsky.social @jodamama.bsky.social

I try to remember to say 'US govt' and not just 'govt' but often fail. I think, if most church-goers read your post they'd say you paint a nightmare picture by saying churches barely exist. But if nothing changes, that's where US churches are headed.

Those are secular endeavors. As long as they don't bring up Jesus at all those events it's cool, just nice people doing nice things. If one needs to listen to a sermon to get a sandwich, it's repugnant.

jodamama.bsky.social @jodamama.bsky.social

I agree. And I chose those examples knowing there were no requirements attached. It’s just, in my experience, a majority of social work is done by Christians. Sadly that’s overshadowed by those who hate in the name of Christ. But I’m no longer a church goer so believe me I get your point.
