Most churches, like most schools, run on the unpaid labor of women…
Most churches, like most schools, run on the unpaid labor of women…
Sounds like a really good place to target for a general strike.
Look at most charitable organizations and fundraisers that supplement nonprofits—you will find so many women
Most of society actually. Care work is real work. Child care. Elder care. Sick care. Emotional labor in almost every guise is low or unpaid and simply expected from women. Also basic executive functioning tasks and administrative tasks.
I was going to say this. Life runs on unpaid women.
I came to say the same
Yes just like my daughter who home schools her 3 kids, cleans the church, prepares Sunday lunch, all while her husband practices his guitar for worship. Because he “works”. 😡 She has a degree in civil engineering.
Some women will never see.
Similar to care of parents who need help as they get older.
Women run all the shit, Jess. House holds too.
It’s amazing how women make this country a decent place to live and the men and churches repay that by belittling the work itself and by slut shaming the entire nation and taking our human & civil rights away.
you mean volunteer… that was me, for years.
not every action people do should involve financial compensation. In fact payment for deeds is the most corrupting thing there is. And no this doesn't mean women should work for free. It means, much of the debasement of American society is due to Americans' use of money as a value system.
We need an alternative to religion. I think the only thing it serves people is a sense of community because it brings in masses to gather.
True that.
The Catholic Church did for years and the Nuns were second class citizens
I worked in healthcare and met many beautiful women who volunteered to make the world a better place.
Word. As a son, husband, grandson, and nephew of teachers, never was there a truer word.
It's like the stockholm syndrome?
Because it used to be the only community outside the home they were permitted?
YES!! I worked 50 hours per week, had 4 kids, and volunteered 10+ hours a week. Partner worked hard and helped with kids tremendously but volunteered 1 hour.
unpaid and underpaid.
www.instagram.com/reel/DLTLlSK...
The whole world does and always has.
Nixon introduced a UBI bill, it fell one vote short in the Senate.
I ponder this when I look at my $500 SS check. All those years I stayed home caring for the kids when they were sick (often!), getting them to appts., volunteering for Scouts (boys & girls), sports, special ed advocacy, pretty much anything relying on volunteers. I made a difference, but not $.
And your Social Security check reflects that. Our labor is simply not valued. I’m doing eldercare right now - again! Watching grandkids. Great retirement 🙄
While the men get richer…
I was raised by Ursuline sisters and taught with SSNDs. I could not have had better people as teachers and colleagues overall. Ha. In sixth grade, Sr. Mary Pius clunked me on the back of my head with her bride of Christ ring and said, “There’s the door Mr. Nagel. Make good use of it.” Well deserved.
All you have to do is know that the religious leaders refused to allow Mary Magdaline's gospel to see the light of day.
AND tried to paint her as nothing more than a whore. MEANWHILE at the Council of Nicea, they threw away entire books of the Bible.
YES Sir. MAN did that , not God.
Correct!
As do most households….
Bey said it best, “who runs the world? Girls!”
While telling women “scripture doesn’t allow you to be equal with the men”
Which is FALSE the Old Testament is historical warnings.. GOD SENT JESUS to tear down the old testement. He chastised the religious leaders of the day for ruining religion. The message GOD wants us to have is love.
The New Testament too Jack
The message is love you're brothers. Who was Mary Magdalene submit To?
The message is the same but the new testament is Instructional imo,and a celebration
The message for the OLD and NEW is not the same, but that is a deep theological conversation. Alas, it doesn't matter which is which because both testaments come with instructions for women to submit to men. Being raised a pastor's kid, I had to listen to it 24/7
Sorry But I belive that your father's idea of the Bible are incorrect in my opinion
He has his doctorate in theological and been preaching for 55 yrs, but sure Jan, I mean Jack 😉 You can pick and choose the parts you like, but either you believe the whole bible is the word of god or you don't. It was a book written by men to control the masses, just like all other religions
Submission in the Bible does not mean think what you think it does.
god who?
The Creator. It's something I believe in. I will never force beliefs on you, for that too is a sin.
I guess that's an easy way out. You get to blame the blatant misogyny and lack of personal responsibility on someone else. Good on ya.
Everyone has an opinion. You don't know me from a rock, yet you through blame in me. Ok
throw
Ah thank you.
Oh, you mean the EO, the new "share your religion at work" decree?
Yes, but if they read the scriptures with their heart, they would see that many women were placed in very important positions among the apostles and in the new church, that were not allowable before Christ. Jesus initiated women's liberation.
I have met many people who read the scripture with their heart, who support their communities, who have told me similar things about how they feel about being a woman and Christ. While I am not religious myself it makes me feel like this discussion is really important and I support all of you.
a creation by men for men believe at your own peril
So true! And it’s been that way for so long.
I think it’s the whole world runs on the unpaid labor of women
Amen
Yes
I’m a preacher’s son…. This Is True, even today !!!👍🏾
The WORLD runs on the unpaid labor of women.
🧵Came here to say exactly that. Recall that jobs women could hold until the 1970s were housekeeper, teacher, nurse and secretary (looked down on due to "affairs" with bosses, voluntary or not). If a woman got married she was expected to leave those jobs. The pay was poor because options were limited
2/2 And THAT is why so many authoritarians start by going after the means by which women have choices that give them economic power over their own lives. The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. And the hand that can compete economically rocks the world. ✊☮️💪
Also, *stewardess*.
T H I S‼️
Happily, probably 🤷🏻♀️
Makes sense
And we have old white men in this country trying to take women back a 100 yrs and put them in their “proper” place. Hence the SCOTUS ruling today
Groomed to be slaves from cradle to grave.
Pretty much all of society does.
and kids (Mormon missionaries)
Another reason for universal basic income.
#BOOST
They spend a lifetime being indoctrinated into believing it is their obligation. Men don't have to because they have to earn the money. One of many reasons i stopped attending.
This is why a person's worth or value shouldn't be tied to their bank account. There are a lot of intangibles in life. Money isn't the only measure there is and power shouldn't be based on who is better financed. Will always end badly.
Churches are evil hellholes
The other day I got a wild hair to look up the church I attended as a child. They're not hiring at this time, but always welcome volunteers for mission work!
So real.
Yes, we need more volunteers!! What a beautiful idea to have women offering their time to churches and schools.
YES. Fucking YES. The whole world runs on the unpaid labour of women.
Correct, and household where the Patriarchy reigns and doesn't help.
Republicans, "God made women to be mans vessel" I don't know where the women's movement moved to but it needs to be brought back.
Yup
There is NO Biblical god! The cult of christianity wants to manipulate everyone into believing their lies. Rewriting history/timeline for money to control us. We were created by ETs!!! You need to watch: Bible Secrets Revealed on Prime, it'll prove that my statement is CORRECT 😌
if we're being honest- it ALL runs on the unpaid labor of women
I left Catholic Church at 13 when seeing nuns run the orphanage, teach school + catechism classes, care for the convent + cleaned the cathedral. The priests? Someone cleaned the rectory and cooked their meals. (Might have been the nuns.) Became a feminist that same year.
I remember a priest used to come into a primarily early bird restaurant I worked at in south Florida. He’d come in every month or so, glad hand everyone he knew and order a nice dinner. He’d pay for a couple of other diners & always used a Black Amex card. This was in the early 1990’s.
There you go. But I'm told that god works in mysterious ways so...
My Mother was active in Church of Christ and as a widow she wasn’t allowed to vote on church business- she could have her father vote in her place. BUT she could tithe, prepare food, clean the church , teach the children. Yeah.. that’s a hard no for me
Once women see churches as businesses selling an invisible fantastical product and inflicting physical and psychic abuse, they may feel differently about volunteering their limited days to sustaining someone else’s livelihood that undermines their own personal agency and rights
Want it done? Ask a nun.
Whoa. One sentence and my head is spinning!!!
🎶Eleanor Rigby, picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been Lives in a dream Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door Who is it for?🎶 Lennon/McCartney

Their best, I think 😍
My preferred is this one ⤵️ open.spotify.com/track/389QX9...
Yes that is really good and the solo guitar is perfect.
Guitar hero.
All of the above and then some!
My Mom was always doing stuff with the "Altar Guild."
They have to save their money to defend the "youth pastors" from pedophilia charges.
Very true! Like how many jobs and committees can you take on " my sister in Christ". Oh, you already have that many commitments . Well, what is 1 more going to hurt when you are so capable of juggling so much. People pleaser me fell for it every time, till I was tossed away after my divorce.
Ah yes, the impure volunteer ~ so many levels of issues
The WORLD runs on the unpaid labor of women. Literally — we are not paid to deliver babies!
I think most Catholic parishes would fall apart without the women volunteers. There are male volunteers, but not nearly as many.
The only reason men have time to “run” the world, is the unpaid labor of women. And if they have families and homes, it is entirely because of the unpaid labor of women.
Another reason to dump the church.
I firmly believe every small town needs an apartment building for every church in town.
As does most everything in this backward country.
Even though I vol plenty myself, I never liked the idea that so many services were volunteer instead of publicly provided. The vols are often women and don't believe that nonsense that vol work is as good as paid on a resume.
So do most households
And most homes
I was thinking (randomly) about pastors' wives yesterday and how much work they do for the church that is just expected of them. No pay. No retirement plan. Wife usually does funeral dinners, hospital comfort, Bible study, etc, working just as hard. Pay them!
Clergy spouse for 32 years, here. I’m in a mainline Protestant denomination- it’s not just evangelicals. The only exception I’ve experienced is with our black members - they always treat me as their “First Lady” without expectation. Of course, they’d love it if I wore a hat, too.
One of my sayings - "Men do what they want to. Women do what has to be done."
Once got a special invitation to a Masonic Lodge and there were women there to cater. Not allowed to enter the sacred precinct but hey, don't expect the master race to make a sandwich.
One thousand percent
And yet, in so many ways, churches (and many schools) are literally at war with women.
Thank you, Jess, for saying this out loud. I attended an Eastern Orthodox wedding last week. Scary. Misogyny, hypocrisy and mythology on display.
A 'good man' isn't even as good as an average woman.
And those who ARE paid (i.e. church office managers) are vastly underpaid and undervalued as just "secretaries," as if they just sit there with nothing to do but gossip with members who stop by. (cont)
I managed a church office for the better part of nine years and it was HUGELY eye-opening, even though I came into it with a lifetime of knowledge of the inner workings of churches. (Many family members were clergy or staff in various capacities.) (cont)
The biggest eye-opener was being part of a "church secretaries" group online. Sooooo many women would lament how they were only paid minimum wage or they put in TONS of unpaid hours, but every last one of them would always quickly justify it as "I see it as my ministry, so it's OK." 😳
Yes, that is so true. If the unpaid women decided to go on strike, you would see the world come to a screeching halt.
Hear, hear!!
I grew up in a small Kansas town. I'm pretty sure my mom's friend group had more influence than any of our city councilmen
After MANY years of doing worship teams I began to realize, if you factor in tithing, I was literally paying to work for my church.
Nuns do ALL the heavy weight lifting for the men in the Catholic church! THEY, care for the sick, teach, help the elderly, clean and even cook and sell cookies and things to keep their con ents going. Priest… a mass a day🤦♀️🤢
My mother, a widow with 11 kids & a full-time job, worked cleaning & cooking at the rectory on weekends for tuition so we could go to school there. Among the indignities suffered, she once was scolded by a priest as if stealing when the secretary gave her leftovers from a party there. Fuck them all.
So do most families.
I’m a pastor’s wife. I did as much, if not more work than he did for 13 years. He left that career a year + ago and I am SO thrilled! I would never ever do it again. They took and took from me and the kids. The repayment? Judgment and even higher expectations. 🙄
Glad you broke free. Work with no appreciation or thanks is punishment.
Until you have an IDEA-eligible kiddo w/ a 504 Plan or IEP, you may NEVER know how little teachers & schools do to teach medically fragile & disabled students. They are scofflaws who ignore federal laws & know it takes lawyers to make them do their jobs. Who teaches? Who fights these battles? MOMS
💯 agree
Amen!
So women stop giving your free labor
Clinton and Harris would have given women their rightful place at the table if not for white men and far too many white woman turning their backs on democracy. Instead a felon and rapist white supremest is destroying America day by day.
Well if the churches paid their female labor force, how in God’s name would they explain that to the pastor who requires maximum pay for minimal work?
So true and under the guise of “her spiritual gift is hospitality …”
Agree. And under appreciated.
So true!
As well as both major political parties. Both parties campaign efforts would grind to a halt without the volunteerism of senior women.
My SIL has worked for a Catholic church for years, and she gets no healthcare or retirement.
Then don’t be a member.
The entire world relies on our unpaid labor in all situations.
TAX CHURCHES!
And no one realizes it. Put a PTA in charge of immigration, Dept of Defense, you name it-problems would be solved by 9 pm.
Tax Churches!!
Yes, they absolutely do. When I told an idiot priest I would no longer volunteer and no longer give money to the church... He responded, saying he didn't need my time nor my money! They'll never get another cent from me! Every woman needs to go on strike!
That is so weirdly true and it’s the first time I’ve thought of the implications of that - it’s kind of depressing
And most non-profits too!
They are brainwashed
The message is always " Do it for the kids, forget about your own."
Tax the church
Seems our society runs on paying people as little as possible… While the capitalist fight for the most money possible from both directions. This seems very wrong, and short sighted.
It sure is.
And when they do pay them (office staff/lay pastors), they pay them low wages and crap/no benefits. Another business model that relies on unpaid wages is martial arts schools. Most require volunteer (unpaid) labor as part of their upper level belt award system.
Truth!
Truer words have not been spoken. Women work for free in so many capacities. No money and no appreciation. If we quit … so many things would fall apart.
I feel this in my bones. I was raised Mormon and they work the fuck out of the women. All while denying females any positions of power.
ExMo here as well. Hi.
Yes. The church would collapse completely without Women's labour.
As do most marriages.
I was a Christian education volunteer in my church for almost 25 years. There were a few men, but bulk of volunteers were women.
When I read young women are leaving the Church in droves while more young men are returning to church, I wouldn’t help but wonder who is going to fill the ranks of the countless volunteer committees, small groups, task forces, etc. needed to keep a church running.
*…I couldn’t help but wonder…
a natural underground, with the power of ocean waves in a hurricane
So very true!
So true!
Add house wife to the list. We all know taking care of kids isn't a job. A job is something you get paid to do. Right?
As a stay-at-home mom whose kids are grown, thank you for saying that.
Done with the disenfranchisement of women in churches.
Truth for 100’s of years. My sister’s husband is on the RNC and she is not but she makes food for their meetings. Carrying water for them once again.
ps, there are two other women shown here, Mme Macron, and PM Meloni of Italy. of the three, I'm pretty certain she is the one who cashes her checks.
Not far from the truth. Men are there too.
Yet, we’re still in the bottom category.
Yes, it's called slavery or slave labour.
Yup
Pfft.
Perhaps in the past, when most women didn't work outside the home. Now, volunteers at churches are mostly retired people, men, as well as women.
Not just “in the past.” Now. Your individual circumstance doesn’t void the overall data. studyfinds.org/household-me...
Women worked inside the homes, they just didn’t get paid for it. My younger brother is a house husband & raising a grandchild while his wife works at a school ( for pay) He’s been ASTONISHED how much work it is - thought he’d have time to go fishing while kid’s at school Joke’s on him!
I became a single parent when my son was 10. I know all about keeping a home, raising a child child, and working at the same time. I also volunteered at my church a lot.
How many men have you convinced that women’s work in the home is, indeed, WORK? Have they seen the light now that you’ve testified? Do they now admit the error they were brought up in & willingly do more of the cleaning or Dr appts etc? Are you standing up for respect for all work not just men’s?
Patriarchy is a slave religion
And homes.
Actually, all societies and their economies do.
This is so true. I look at all the work my aunt did at her church - vacation Bible school, Sunday school, home visits, catering after funerals, etc - all done by the women. She was in the choir and did readings. If they needed anything, they knew who to call.
Women have a tendency to volunteer and you have a problem with that?
The world…
And underpaid labor of women…
To quote a highly misogynistic old saying, “Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free.” Do you think that might be applicable here?
Yup!
I would only edit to add: SOCIALLY EXPECTED unpaid labor of women.
A laugh for these dark days. My daughter sent this. I’m a retired school librarian and she’s a sped para. She can’t sit outside or go to the pool without being surrounded like a movie star. 😂 I always told my husband if you want to feel like a movie star in your town be a teacher and go to Walmart.👸
I can testify to that, having been in leadership at several churches. And I’m a total progressive. Just sayin’…
Absolutely!!
Or unpaid property taxes
The world's entire economic framework is designed to only function when 50% of the population provides unpaid labour. Keeping women distracted and oppressed is essential to maintain this. It's done on purpose.
And religion is the best way to achieve compliance. Women should not only NOT provide labor to the church (free OR paid), they should actively RESIST it altogether. Religion is the primary source of societal oppression.
You spelled the whole world wrong. 😂 I get you!
Yes they do ! very good point ! which needs to be pointed out to either The unaware , or uneducated , or Republican maggots!
If teachers only worked contract hours people would see the truth.
Not necessarily. The students’ learning would suffer, and it would only give the critics more ammunition against public education. If dedicated teachers were actually paid for the time and effort they put in above and beyond, they’d be less resentful and even more committed.
I wish there was a way for people to see how much time teachers put in off books. My work day officially started at 8. I was in at 7:45. Our paid time was until 3. I was there most days until 4:30. Not to mention Sundays grading.
My mother's senior care facility is staffed by women (understaffed and underpaid) and daughters of residents who fill in the slack.
True story.
Except churches corrupt and poison the minds of children, while schools enable critical thinking.
Considering the number of female Episcopalian priests, female Presbyterian ministers and female Methodist bishops, (along with all the Lutheran priests of course), your claim is perhaps a bit excessive. All of these church functionaries are paid. Perhaps you're thinking of RC nuns? Baptists?
She's not talking about clergy. She's talking about people who clean, do flowers, organize, make tea, teach Sunday school, manage children etc. In short - do all those things that most men don't see on a daily basis.
Oh. You mean the imaginary 'church life' circa 1925, amongst the Anglicans. In the real world of 2025, 'all those things' are done by church staff, who are employed to do them. You might want to check the employee rosters of any Protestant Church offering services, rather than the pretend world.
Always love being told that my life is imaginary. And why assume all churches are Anglican? Or Canadian?
And hospitals
Yes. However, churches should still be taxed.
Schools should not be allowed to use free labor as schools get government funding and either that pays for everything or they are funding schools incorrectly! Churches should not be allowed to because they are tax exempt.
Schools are underfunded
I agree schools should be funded before anything else. That is part of the reason we are in this predicament.
Seriously, 😒 like most things that I have experienced
Suckers!
And most homes And most non profits
A Lysistrata strike of solidarity and we could collectively ask for anything we wanted.
Just for the record, my buddy was a grade school gym teacher. Not all. He's struggling right now on his pension.
You are so right, thanks
The entire world does… what will it take for all women to lock arms and take control?
I was in charge of a committee that provided dinner to visiting priests at the rectory. A huge storm arrived. Streets flooded. Women couldn’t leave home to bring food. The pastor called me raging demanding the dinner. I suggested politely that he should order pizza. I stopped volunteering!
This is true of almost everything in LIFE!!
Someone is always willing to, and there often is a social tax to be paid for *not* being willing to.
Yes and we need to stop all of that. If we got paid for all of that would make over $150,000 at least.
😡
The tweet of the day.
For sure!
And households
That's true!
As do most activist organizations
I think at this point it’s safe to just say the world runs on this!
And what is most stomach turning, but not surprising, the UK has the suicide prevention "charity" Samaritans that exlevts female volunteers to stay on the line when sex callers call in to jerk off,not to mention wanting women to "save," men on the edge of train platforms. expret.org/2024/02/28/s...
exlevts = expects 🙄
This will not end well. Don't not ask men you don't know to go out for coffee. Ugh this whole thing gives me the creeps.
The Samaritans as a whole give me the creeps. Their Trustpilot score is telling, including from people having volunteered there. 80% (1&2 stars combined) is a very poor testament to this "charity". I believe the govt should look into them. www.trustpilot.com/review/www.s...
P.S. and if you have daughters of any teenagers, tell them HOW to help by calling for help instead of going on their own. It's not the public's job to do what mental health services should do incl. Samaritans.
... and men. I was a church mouse at a mega church for seven years. Churches seem to slot jobs into men's and women's work.
Oh, I know. I spent so much of my life doing church stuff.
Most of the world does
At least schools are useful. Churches are a net negative on society.
I’d say most churches. But the small church I attended had such a huge food ministry they often made the news. My neighbors’ church filled its lawn area with tiny homes for homeless students. A facility that provides emergency housing for kids removed from parents is run by a church. Etc. etc.
You’d have to admit your church is an oasis in the desert of Christian “humanity”
Absolutely. And even as outstanding as that church was, only about 20% of the members actively contributed time to the ‘good works’. I always asked, what if Christians took Christ’s commands seriously. I no longer attend and am still wondering.
These are things our government (and our taxes) should provide. We should not have to rely on charity or churches to feed, house, and medically treat people.
I agree. But let's admit it- government has never done a good job of it. It should be government, and we need to keep advocating for it, absolutely. My only point here is at this time in history SOME churches do amazing work despite huge challenges. A minority of them, yes.
Oh absolutely! I used to volunteer at a clothing closet/soup kitchen/shelter run by the church with my memere as a kid. There is no reason churches still couldn't do those things. There will ALWAYS be a need and a space for that. But to solely rely on the charity of rich/powerful church orgs? Nah
The thing is, when I was a church-goer my friends said it should not be government, it should be churches, & I always replied that gov't must step in bc churches fail. So even at my most religious I was pro-gov't services. It's so sad - all this talk & the suffering continues. Decade after decade.
I live in France and in the Netherlands, so for me it's the other way around. Churches barely do anything because they barely exist. Maybe they'll collect clothes for a neighborhood, which is a good thing, but there already are secular organizations that do that everywhere.
I try to remember to say 'US govt' and not just 'govt' but often fail. I think, if most church-goers read your post they'd say you paint a nightmare picture by saying churches barely exist. But if nothing changes, that's where US churches are headed.
Those are secular endeavors. As long as they don't bring up Jesus at all those events it's cool, just nice people doing nice things. If one needs to listen to a sermon to get a sandwich, it's repugnant.
I agree. And I chose those examples knowing there were no requirements attached. It’s just, in my experience, a majority of social work is done by Christians. Sadly that’s overshadowed by those who hate in the name of Christ. But I’m no longer a church goer so believe me I get your point.
The whole world runs on the unpaid labor of women.
Facts. -A teacher
Truth
Love Leonard Cohen
Me, too!
Already decided to put Songs of Love and Hate on when I do dishes after lunch.
Yessssss!
DEFINITELY.
ALL churches run on Volunteers, that enable the pastor to become holy by the act of HOARDING and AVARICE as clearly stated by the Word!
Yep. And easily 80% of the protesters that I see are women
And so many women confronting ICE. The fight against fascism is being lead by women 🦹♀️
We are sick of men running things into the ground. And by men, I mean racist bigoted small-minded men that start wars over who has a bigger package. Spoiler. None of them.
If not more. So true.
I was being conservative. Didn't want to disrespect the men that do protest but agree, more than 80% women
I understand and isn’t it fascinating how we still tippy toe around men. We don’t want to ever appear disrespect them. No judgment!!! We were all groomed to do this. 🙏🏻🙌🏻
Agree. Sadly.
I'm thankful my husband makes it to more protests than I do.(Proudly waving an American flag!) I make it less because I'm at my second job or a church project! ( So...yeah...)
And over 60
Absolutely.
And that is what the Republicans are trying to do to us, make us once again an unpaid work force. The main function is raising the flagging birth rate. They take away all options until there is nothing left but servitude.
FACT
You mean like the world. They really should be in charge. Men suck.
Certainly true of the Fundamentalist "Christian" churches.
