43 here and would retire tomorrow if I could. The corporate machine sucks.
43 here and would retire tomorrow if I could. The corporate machine sucks.
🤣🤣🤣
Retirement is the best thing I ever did!!
Retiring (2022) was best decision of the last 15 years. Boring slow regulation-bound “financial industry” job. Now teaching and volunteering in immigrant-related service “where the action is” these days. (BTW, retirement is *cheaper* than work: *big* savings on gas, food, clothes, more.)
I worked with a couple of corporate attorneys (women) who tried podcasting. They wanted to be celebrities. They were resentful of having been forced to retire. That Economist article has legs because the 1% enjoys bossing around proles & unless they have competitive hobbies, they get antsy.
They're right...retirement is boring, losing all you contacts and the best way to become dumb. It's not about the money, it's about your brain
If only there were things to do to stay mentally active WITHOUT being a cog in some rich asshole’s continued exploitation. Hopefully someone can come up with something.
That's the problem....
Sorry your personal hobbies and interests aren't fulfilling dude.
They aren't mentally fulfilling...
Well that's a you problem. Many of us have very fulfilling interests.
Me too, still doing some hard sophisticated stuff for free. But it's not my hobby
Since most people by the time they hit 50 start having medical issues is why they want to retire. To focus on health.
I retired last June. I highly recommend it!!
I mean, as Gen X, I've recently updated my retirement plans from "the 30 seconds between massive heart attack at my desk & hitting the floor dead" to "Dying in a climate emergency &/or war started by the fascist in charge of the USA" but those are still retirement plans.. this is corporate bullshit.
My dad retired like.. I dunno, 30ish years ago? More? Dude seems pretty happy to just potter about, doing his hobbies, going out for lunch, waking up and having a breakfast from like 9 - 11:30.. If I could afford it I'd retire now. THERE IS SO MUCH FUN STUFF TO DO THAT ISN'T THIS.
If I wasn't sitting here, I'd be doing renovation shit around the house, popping out for coffee...
My god, I'd be so happy.
☝️☝️🎯
What is going on? I found this headline in the USA Today a couple of weeks ago. Old folks don't need to retire and they don't need air conditioning 🙃
I recently retired. It's over rated
I'm retired. I highly recommend it. There is so much more to life than a job.
The secret is: Retire TO something, not FROM something. Or, as the old sign says: Plan ahead!
Yeah......I'm not feeling the love this picture conveys. More like this.
The Economist is a joke. This sudden love of worker bees working longer is propaganda. We all need to work less not more.
Yes, it is. And not many people are gonna be enthused by it, either. Imagine saying "Wheeeeeeeeee!" over working yourselves to death in America today.
But think of the people interactions! You'll be bored! Work shall set you free was the Auschwitz slogan.
Why you should never vote Republican...
Hahaha. From someone who doesn’t really work.
I asked myself earlier this year: Retire to do what? You have 16 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 52 weeks/year to fill. That is a lot of walks.
Walking away from work on my last day was one of the best feelings of my life. I wish I could've afforded to do it sooner.
You must’ve hated your job.
The two hip replacements and one shoulder surgery didn't really endear my job to me. Glad I got out at 59, could not physically continue.
Guilty, and yet I had a high paying job with great benefits. The vast majority of people I know fall into the hate/don't like their job as opposed to the like/love camp. And that's understandable. If it were fun they would call it play, not work. I envied the few people I know that love their jobs.
I definitely hated mine. I retired immediately when I was eligible; 3 days after my 62nd birthday. I called in sick for the entire week before that, to make sure I burned through every minute of sick time I had on the books, since they wouldn’t have paid me for it. 😂
Omg. Nice try
I'd like to see the author of that article just try and schedule a get-together with retired people. They're too busy to meet up!
🖕🏻 is all I have to say to that 🖕🏻
No one is forced to stay retired. Telling though, how few return to working.
Speaking as an elder who has bad knee...I'm not laughing. This is part of grooming America to accept that you work until you drop dead. And if you can't work due to physical or mental disability, you starve to death - because no one will hire you when they can get someone young, strong and cheap.
Dear Lunatic, you are spot on! they are grooming us....
Sadly true!
When the subject of my being retired comes up among friends, they often chime in that they are still working, as if it is a virtue. If it didn't offend, I would just answer, "Choices..." I usually play it off by thanking them for funding my bar tab, also known as Social Security.
True. But we can laugh at what a joke it is that they depict working as flying around the office playing with the spinning chairs rather than actually doing work.
It's kind of like promoting the US prison system for its fabulous gyms.
Just like the good old days.
I am 67. I've been retired for five years. The only time I think about work is when I wake up from a nightmare that I am still there. Retirement is the best!
Me too!
It’s not just me then, and I retired 14 years ago!
Retirement. Is. Awesome! Don’t believe anything else is true
The machine needs you. You yearn for the machine.
WTF??! This is The Onion, right?
I am twice as productive and 10 times happier since I retired decades ago. If, however, work is how you define yourself, and you do it 24-7 because you love it—go for it. But I am laughing out loud.
Stay indebted to the system forever!
Counterpoint: Retirement is AWESOME!
This GenXer says f**********************ck THAT.
Rubbish. Id go tomorrow if i could
Yeah I'll miss 90 minutes each way commutes
The capitalists are pushing their propaganda hard. Need to keep exploiting you until you're dead.
I worked my whole damn life. Retired and loving it.
Someone should bully whoever wrote that article.
My life has no purpose unless I’m working to make the rich even richer. /s
Lol, my generation is never going to be able to retire anyway.
I'm retired. It's awesome.
Didn't read the article but I'm lol'ing, too. The reason I should never retire is because I CAN never retire. Too many financial setbacks over the years coupled with bad decision-making means I'll be working until I drop dead. Oh well. 😊
I'm thoroughly enjoying my re-tyre-ment.
I was forced into early retirement and the only reason I think about working again is if money will run out before we die.
Presumably, they're hoping to keep retirees in the workforce to replace all those deported foreigners. As if!
I will be working another 10 years minimum. At my current age my father had been retired for a year and playing golf everyday. 30 years later he’s still playing golf everyday. 🙄
Ah yes... the sum of my entire worth is the time I sacrifice to FEED THE MACHINE! Yeah... nah.
When I retired, I was told by someone that I would miss the mental stimulation of work. It’s been 18 years and not so far.
Even the character there appears under duress at this headline.
Retire? lol that’s assuming the younger generations will even have a choice
retirement was the best thing I ever did. I have plenty of money, a nice car, a nice home and all the time I want for what ever I want. (and I know that I am extraordinarily lucky and too many people don't have these options).
Seriously?! 🙄🙄🙄
Retired at 53 and 1/2 (ATC). How did ever have time to work?
This fucking hilarious. I just celebrated my first year of being retired. I retired as soon as I could, literally 3 days after I turned 62. I’m LOVING it!!!
Another reason why I left the US and moved back to Germany ! Nobody in his right mind would think like that here !
Wow.
After teaching for over thirty years I can say that it was time to retire and I though I loved my job and the students, I don’t miss being in front of a classroom of kids at 7:15AM at all!
30 years in law/18 as a felony judge. Retired and very happy to be done. Wish my kids and grands had a future they could count on to be able to do the same.
If not for the cost of healthcare, I would probably retire much sooner than I can.
lame.
The eCommunist… ffs
I am going to work in upper, mid level, management until the day I die. It's more fun than playing with my grand kids.
Tell me you have no friends and your family hates you without saying...
As someone who purposely switched from full time to occasional work, lemme tell you hahahahahaha it's awesome
The pseudo-intellectual counterpart to MAGA officials saying we should get the elderly off social security and back to work.
💙💙💙💯
"I lack the imagination to find interests, passion and meaning without money."
tell that to chambermaids; keep on doing that 8-hours of backbreaking labor until you're 80!
Ha! Too late.
Being retired is AMAZING and so freeing.
That's hilarious. I retired in April & I love it. My stress is greatly reduced. Bonus. I was a federal worker. Now, the government is paying me a pension to protest them & resist the regime. So much winning here.
Trust me, it is. Retired early 5 years ago. Not one day has passed that I thought I’d really rather be at work.
Man, I’ve been ready to retire since I turned 18. I’m sorry if your life is so empty that you wouldn’t want to have freedom, but that’s not where I’m at! 🤣
bsky.app/profile/alex...
This article is brought to us by the people who want 90 year olds working crop fields.
While I’m no longer part of the action, I have something 1,000 times better: freedom.
Curious, what do you do for 16 hours/day?
“Work is overrated”
Retirement is fulfilling as you make it to be. I think the biggest problem is too many people choose to retire without any planning, so they get bored during the extra 8+ hrs a day they have
I ♥️ retirement. No alarm clock. I leisurely wake up, drink tea, doomscroll, piddle in my garden, get out of the house every day. The very best part is doing WHAT I want, WHEN I want. Money plays no role or concern for me. I hated chasing the $$. It was never high on my priority list.
🤣😆🤣😆🤣
Retiring is an opportunity to give back to your community however you want to, on your own schedule. Volunteering is a great way to meet nice people. You can lean something new, donate your professional skills to a nonprofit, advocate for change, etc. (Respect to those who can’t afford to retire.)
After 33 years of working hard, with the same company, I volunteer to sometimes keep my pajamas on all day, shower, put on fresh pajamas, then go back to bed. 😂 That’s in between attending concerts, sometimes on weeknights.
The freedom to choose! You do you! Personally I did nothing but knit for a solid year when I retired after about the same no. of years working. I needed the recovery time!! Now whatever I do is on *my* terms. I’m glad to have the opportunity to “give back” when and where I can.
I have been retired for ten years and have told everyone it is the best gig ever!! Monday morning and I get to stay in my pj’s and drink my coffee while I consider my next vacation/escape. Lunch with gal pals to plan activities against the gov’t. Plenty of time to read. Retirement is bliss.
These folks are clearly high on their own supply.
Hobbies, despite trump making them all super expensive.
I’m glad my hobby is reading and that we have libraries. We donate there’s instead of buying books as their programs are also fun. Ours have art activities and cooking demos, for example. One branch has tools to rent, so even home improvement projects as hobbies are not so pricy.
WRONG.🤣 I'm enjoying resisting, taking classes, and volunteering! Feels like my time is more worthwhile than ever.
I've been retired for ten years, I often doomscroll for hours, and I've never felt more fulfilled.
TOIL TIL YOU DIE Billionaires aren't going to get richer on their own work.
Work until you die, apparently. Me, I got out when "the action" became too much and the company wasn't prepared to compensate me for all the extra crap they were dropping on me. Voting with my feet. Retirement is wonderful.
Why I’ll never retire: $ (lack of it)
One of these days my lotto tickets will pay off and I won't have to work. The true American dream.
It's all we got left, these days.
Can't wait until I never have to hear the word "framework" again tbh (who am I kidding I'm 38, I'll never be able to retire lol)
Are you fucking kidding me?!?! That’s such a messed up article.
I'm 55. On this day I still have 11 years, 5 months and 13 days to go before I'm allowed to retire. I'm not going to wait for that. I will go parttime when I'm 62, two days work, 5 days off. Stop entirely when I'm 65. I started working at 16, it's been enough...
I am fortunate that I was able to retire at 42. I am now 64 and don’t regret, not even for one second, that I am not working. I am as busy as I was when I worked only now I do things I want to do. Community service, hobbies and gardening, lots to keep me occupied.
That’s a pretty intense headline in favor of modern serfdom. Cool.
Never retire says a person with a great job. But the action at many (most?) jobs is mind-numbing boredom, isolation, overwork, low pay, no benefits, burnout, unrealistic expectations, and lack of appreciation. So no thanks. Retirement please.
Says a self destructive workaholic
It may not be fulfilling but I don’t have to do what some idiot boss tells me to do so there’s that 🤷♂️🤣
Omg 😆
I went at 62. If I could have afforded it I’d have hung it up 60
After 40 years of off shifts, holidays, mandatory overtime, I am quite content to drink tea and read. Granted, I didn't expect to smash the patriarchy again, but here we are.
