Someone working for minimum wage in Iowa would need to put two hours of work to make meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and gravy for their family.
Someone working for minimum wage in Iowa would need to put two hours of work to make meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and gravy for their family.
And Iowa’s (and Nebraska’s) GDP is down 6%.
And this is so ridiculous but so true. 😢
That’s if you have a kitchen… and the food doesn’t cook itself, you have to pay to turn appliances on. I find it more instructive to compare fast food prices to minimum wage. If you work a minimum wage job that’s all you have time for, and you DO think about how many hours of labor you are eating.
One thing a lot of people don’t factor in, unless they’ve had to start over in life, is the cost of condiments & spices, etc… You wouldn’t cook a meatloaf without onion powder, an egg, ketchup, or breadcrumbs. You wouldn’t cook broccoli without an oil or butter…salt?!? Would you? Could you?
I definitely think about it. Some I’m able to grow. I bought some cheap spices from the dollar store (where everything is more than a dollar now) and regretted it. So figure about $20-30 to stock a kitchen.
However, I do eat broccoli and many other vegetables without any butter, salt, or dressing.
You’re lucky you have a place to grow these things… Not everyone does.
Well, I said “some…” it’s a pot on the patio. But you’re right… like I said, some don’t have a kitchen.
I wish none of us had to worry about that ☹️🧡
Is Meatloaf really Meatloaf without an egg, salt, onion of some sort, ketchup….Or is it just beef?
Great messaging. I think we (people who care) need to start printing cards with concise facts/gut punches like this and leave them in public bathrooms, store shelves…
Thanks to the Trump Tariff Taxes on the American people.
If you go back to trump’s early statements, he stated that he only wanted beef to be affordable for the wealthy
That's just insane. 😓
person in Iowa can replace this worker 👇 bsky.app/profile/ufw....
And this ignores the fact they get taxed heavily and do not bring home minimum wage per hour. So it’s even worse.
And that’s before they 1) pay taxes on the income they made, and 2) pay sales taxes on the food they bought. In reality, they’d have to work for ~3 hours to make one family dinner* (no dessert, no drinks, no leftovers). *I added some broccoli to the price of the meal.
Not to mention half of the money from that 3 hours must be set aside for permission to sleep inside so better make it 6. It’ll be 8 unless you can walk to work. 8 hours a day for one person to break even. Gas electric and water extra in most cases.
Taxes, withholding, employees benefits deductions...it takes more than that in hours if we talk about the hours to take home thay pay, not just earn it...
Unless their payroll taxes and company health insurance plan premiums are factored in; then they have to work four hours...
I want folks to really think about that this means that 1/2 all worked hours would be to feed their family dinner. What are we doing.
When we’re looking at paycheck-to-paycheck wage workers, odds are better than not they are not getting health insurance thru their job.
Does that take into consideration taxes on that two hours?
That's crazy!
That would be one meal. 😞
Take that a step further ... families used to be able to have someone who could take care of the home and spend two hours making meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and gravy for no wages. Also, AL, LA, MS, SC, and TN have no state minimum wage. GA, OK, and WY are below the Fed $7.25 rate.
Just to be clear, I was referring to a stay at home mom or stay at home dad, not slavery. Though, most of those states with sub-Federal or no minimum wage do seem to have something in common ...
That’s sad. 😢
I think it’s their attempt to get the End Times back on track to where you would have to work an entire day to earn a loaf of bread that you still had to make from scratch when you got home.
Hopefully not , that’s no way live.
Not their problem🤷♂️ they’ll call it “survival of the fittest” by letting the fed min wage to languish for 16 years, adj for inflation it’s worth less than the pittance that gave rise to the Fed Min Wage Act. In the 1930s. Taking away vaccines and healthcare, SS, they want us to go die already.
You know what to do … general strike
Absolutely. I mean, I wondered why we didn’t do it 20 years ago when I thought of it, but we didn’t have the tech to really get out there all together. Maybe this time we can really do it.
🙏🙏🙏🙏 You won‘t know until you try it.
You’re probably right !
They’ve been telling us for years. Trump had a speech his first term where he spoke of people working 2-3 jobs like it was an accomplishment, their replacement for ACA is “everyone dies, maybe you didn’t deserve healthcare anyway” Mitch said Kentuckians would “get over” losing Medicaid and SNAP.
Also don’t forget the massive amounts of pesticides and crap in all the food etc..So also working $ss off to get food that ultimately makes you sick. again- they don’t care because they can afford the organic food and they don’t care if people get sick and die. They think they won’t have the blame
And more than that because you need to pay for the stove, pots and pans, your electrical bill, your rent, transport to work and the grocery store, water and sewage bill...
Yes, this is true. I was on vacation in Colorado last week and spent $9.25 per pound for ground beef at a local grocery store. 😳
Brasil was one of USA's best suppliers of meat (and coffee) and both of these will pay 50% tariffs there in the USA starting tomorrow. Because the 🍊💩 wants to save 🤡💩 from being prosecuted after he tried a coup d'etat that included killing the president & vice elected & supreme court ministers. So 🤷🏻
#MinWage So a minimum wage earner would have to work a full day before income and FICA taxes for one week’s worth of #beef protein for a family of 4, assuming 4 oz servings. Not a #SNAP
