As long as you're not in a duty to retreat state, you're probably covered, and that's almost all of them.

But, if you are in a castle doctrine state, such as the one I am in, be sure that you wait until they actually enter your home before you take the proper action. Castle doctrine says that your home is your castle and you are free to defend it.

I'd recommend reading up on the matter before you shoot someone, at that point, it's a little late, and there are complexities, and I know I'm not current.

I would also recommend that most people read up on the matter. However, I am well versed on the matter.

For an example, in my state, if someone entered my home without my permission, I am absolutely entitled to defend my home. Having said that, I've had people invade my home. I did not shoot them. I shot too many people in my 15 years in the military, and would prefer to avoid that when possible.
