I don’t use AI because I’m infuriated for the artists and writers and philosophers who’ve had their intellectual property stolen. I also hate boring and impersonal shit. If someone can’t be bothered to write something, why should I be bothered to read it?

I had an appt with an orthopedic surgeon. First thing he said was do you mind if I initiate the AI to record our session, it’s training to be a doctor? I looked at him like he was insane and said “no, I don’t want that!”He was shocked…
And spent the rest of the appt looking at me like an enigma he was trying to suss out. Tell me how a man with that level of education and, obviously, intelligence can’t figure out that 1. AI drs are not a good prospect and 2. that recording my appt is a violation of my privacy.

Hey Jess, people with intelligence rarely need "artificial intelligence", and even if they do use it, they use it as their slave, not their MASTER.
Like it or not, AI is a tool that can help to accelerate your understanding of all sorts of things. Yes, AI gobbles up the information shared by others and does not compensate them at all. But honestly, most of that is in the public domain already. AI is going to be used for evil or good.
Right now, most AI is being curated to avoid promoting racist, sexist, etc. ideas to facilitate early adoption, however, AI can easily be used for evil stuff as well. I guarantee you the likes of Musk and other unsavory characters are using AI to workshop things like how to carry out eugenics.
AI is a new weapon in information warfare and we're in the midst of an arms race.

Technology always arrives as a savior, only to show its flaws sooner or later. Computers were going to allow people to work less, but the computer became a model, and people worked more. We’ve already seen problems with AI. More are likely to follow. Look where the quest for easy answers gets you.
How do you effectively turn AI off? My phone's Google answers are always AI.
I don't know of a way to permanently turn it off for Google but if you use -ai at the end of your sting, it won't return Ai results. And yeah, I know. It's ridiculous that's the hoop we have to jump through each time.
Google *web* search doesn’t resort to AI. There is supposed to be a setting in the google search engine settings to turn on web permanently but I haven’t found it yet.

i could be wrong but i think the ai has subscriptions which allow it access to gated material so then users may ask for summaries thereof - not the same as reading the original but for many it is close enough
When you Google something, you’ll see an AI summary at the top. But that’s not really what I’m talking about. I’m talking about people using it to write essays or commentaries or opinion pieces.
i use it to crack gated articles on the internet - that screws the media firms, not the creators (at least not in a primary way)

There are so many other great uses for AI, you’d be amazed at the data, analytics and deep dive comparisons it provides. I had a frustrating conversation with a Trumper who was spewing nonsense, so I asked ChatGPT the question and it provided the truthful answer that the Trumper seemed to believe

I work in academic publishing and tested an AI editing program. It was dreadful. Over-editing that destroyed the author's voice and made mistakes because it didn't understand the material. It doesn't leave queries for the author - just barrels ahead and makes changes you have to wade through.

There was no AI when I was in college. I spent hours in the library researching to write my papers. Colleagues are now using AI for their college courses. I hear you, but you are missing a bigger point. For example, some people want to use AI as a collaborator to help them write better. Think of it like your spell-checker, only more sophisticated. I find it an excellent tool for writing better letters to my members of Congress. That is a good thing.
One of my students found that leaders in her study were using AI to craft sympathetic emotional responses to pet deaths, family trauma situations, and responses to other complex situations. AI might enhance connections if used appropriately. We are at the beginning of AI communication.
AI works okay as a proofreader but if you follow all the suggestions on, say, Grammarly, it quickly robs you of your voice and makes everything you write sound like a corporate email.

I don't use AI and don't plan to ever knowingly use it. From what I've seen of it it usually often produces factually wrong, bland, non-creative and boring content. AI is the exact opposite to human intelligence and creativity. People who use AI are condoning theft and killing their creativity.
