I read 1984. And Fahrenheit 451. And A Brave New World. And The Handmaid‘s Tale. And The Giver. And The Road. And The Lottery. And The Parable of the Sower. And The Hunger Games. I know what I’m seeing.
I read 1984. And Fahrenheit 451. And A Brave New World. And The Handmaid‘s Tale. And The Giver. And The Road. And The Lottery. And The Parable of the Sower. And The Hunger Games. I know what I’m seeing.
Wow
I read Hustler Letters, and they carry the same themes of dystopian societies and fear of repression.
Life is so strange and yet somewhat predictable. I was raised in a combative community and had classmates that laughed and cheered while watching 451 in middle school. They’re some of the worst maga I know - their sm feeds are a string of misunderstood issues , disinformation, and contradictions.
Colbert and Kimmel should run for the presidency and vice-presidency. Two very happily married family men, quick on their feet, intelligent and brave enough to use their gifts of comedy to speak truth to power so that everyone hears it. Kimmel's quote about Kirk? None: people.com/what-did-jim...
I loved all those books, but I’m not loving this reality.
With Fox News add Soylent Green
Really?
And I watched Squid Game. We are living Squid Game in real time.
As others have said, too many people are still under the delusion that we can vote this out. Until that delusion breaks then nothing is going to change.
I lived under communism until 1984, I knew straight away.
Check check check.
I lived it. I know what I’m experiencing.
Boom. These should be on everyone's reading list if they haven't read them by now.
This is such an amazing series. Have you seen boy in the striped pajamas?
You could read Stephen King's The Long Walk if you want another view of a future totalitarian government (the movie just came out, but books are better).
A bunch of us see it 😡
What you’re seeing is the end of American democracy!!
I had 4 Polish grand parents you survived ww2. I know what Im seeing.
*who
Great list. If not already, you might consider We by Zamyatin. Plus Omon Ra by Pelevin and War With the Newts by Capek. They seem compatible with your already keen eye.
It is beyond scary.
Word! 📖
Don’t forget The Stand ‼️😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 It started with a pandemic 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Problem is, they didn't.
May the odds be ever in our favor
The odds are NEVER in our favor.
Surprised they haven't banned THOSE books yet.
Yep and I’m reading WWII with focus on the OSS, SOE and the underground resistance fighters. Trust me I know what I’m seeing as well. The direct persecution here is a different group but here they have identified multiple grps. All Non whites, migrants,Gays,Trans and then cut all women’s freedoms
The Nazis identified multiple groups as well. We don’t hear about it as much but they also attempted to exterminate (just a sampling) Roma, little people, LGBT, disabled people and let’s not forget political dissidents. It’s all a way of propping up their narcissism and explaining their failures.
OMG. In all my reading has been centered on the persecution of Jews. I pulled articles that are frightening bc we are hearing indications of groups of Americans as their nxt targets. Eyes Wide folks. Thank you for pointing this out.
And this is why there’s a rejection of the Humanities.
Those books predicted what is happening now.
Thanks for the reading list. I’ve read some but not all.
Reading will save us.
I knew when I watched this more than ten years ago that this is where we're heading. The 1% (aka #fascist oligarchs) are the head; everyone else is the tail. youtu.be/BVGMMFjva58
Last Christmas I gave my son 1984 to read. For his birthday I gave him Animal Farm and The Jungle.
My son asked for all those books because he never read them in high school! I bought them for myself so we could read them together. I thought it would be fun. Like a book club.
Hey, read a book by Father Nathan Monk called Russian Sleeper Cell soon if you can. He was a Russian Orthodox Priest who fled Russia when this started there.
I read ‘Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me’ (Farina) in my younger days, but the title fits better today.
We all do! Some people just won't believe their own eyes and ears. You could read this book. It has a lot of pertinent history that should tell us that this crap they are trying to sell, white patriarchy, capitalism, imperialism. She tells how these things have shaped our present situation.
Stendhal a French writer La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839), provides thousands of rules to stay in the good graces of a capricious ruler. Never criticize the prince in word or deed, or voice any disloyal thought.
The problem with these freaks still supporting him is that they haven’t read anything more complicated than a Cracker Barrel menu.
If you liked those, you’ll love Current Events!
The Sheep look Up
Time for a refresher. I vaguely remember The Chrysalids but worth a reread. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chr...
I have read a little red book, mein Kampf and the Turner diaries because reading allows understanding but not agreement. Republicans see them as guide books.
Have you read The Plot Against America (Roth) and Prequel (Maddow)? They are even scarier.
The Dead Zone.... 😟
Hello Martha how are you doing?
I read Revelation and became an Atheist because of it. To continue to be a part of a group that subjugates you, I will never understand.
Read all those books and a biography of Roy Cohn. And I remember the McCarthy hearings. I definitely know what’s going on.
They WERE FICTION 🤬
Same here….wholly terrifying to witness such things in real time.
I just see white people in America voting for trump or 3rd parties
Nice reading list, but try reading some nonfiction too. The True Believer, Anatomy of a Revolution, and history books. Read well documented history books.
Americans are so ignorant of their own history. You can't fight back if you don't know who you are fighting.
A great book! I recommend it to new immigrants who know almost nothing of American history. The True Believer and An Anatomy of Revolution are also excellent reading. Try also, Rats In The Grain and No Man Knows My History.
I agree Jess
Yup. And the country still elected a Roger-Jack hybrid. 🤦♂️
Dictatorship?????
The SF writers have been trying to warn us about what was coming for many years🥀
I've only read four of those, and I don't think I'm paranoid either.
So do I and many other people do as well
You need William Shirer’s excellent factual book alongside the fiction.
Even best laid plans fail...they should watch Fallout.
Too bad that MAGAts don’t read.
MAGA has the media literacy of a pile of wet, moldy wood.
Go and get these banned books now! Read them! They do enlighten us! These banned books are no longer taught in our high schools... For a reason!!
And I saw Soylent Green. It's coming, too.
Just googled the movie plot. Going to seek this out and watch.
It's an old one.
Looks great!
And I’ve been reading books and watching documentaries and series on the holocaust and WWII since I was nine years old so that is 50 years now. I also know what I am seeing.
Yes, the classic Western education system made highschoolers read 1984 and Animal Farm. Up till 1975 or so...
I do not remember if I was required to read them or not, but I definitely read both of them and and I graduated HS in the early 80s so a little later than ‘75.
Same here, but add almost 2 more decades later. Mind you, that was in Canada not the US.
So, in the 1970s, there was a concerted effort by Jews in this country to ensure that it never happens again. So anyone who went to school in the 80s learned about the Holocaust. I read The Diary of Anne Frank when I was 13. Now I'm 60. I knew what was coming by January.
60 in a few months myself and Jewish.
That is deep thoughts for sure
I read Azimov's Foundation in my 20's (76 now) & the roots start with the takeover by Tech Oligarchs creating a kind of AI, which then self runs, the humans involved become demoted to a quasi scientific/religious cult, followed by collapse at the centre & chaos in the periphery. Sound familiar?
I read about Hungary, Russia and North Korea which happened in real time by the book. apnews.com/article/trum...
It’s all coming to fruition…
I doubt any of we who live in the real world aren’t seeing this as clearly as yourself. And immense respect for reading all those. I haven’t worked up the nerve to do yet.
Then there's, "I love the poorly educated" DJT
And "Smart people don't like me" also DJT
A favorite of mine ☺️
Have you read “the boy who dared?”
I've read most. The first four and the last two. Haven't yet read The Giver, The Road, or The Lottery. I'll check them out. The elevation of RFK, Jr & his anti-vaccine bullshit will definitely kill people, which is what this admin. I've not had Covid; vaccinated thru the VA. We'll receive in Oct.
I suggest…not that you asked, but…save “The Road” for when you can handle it. Some of us were devastated, others seem to feel like there is some promise in the ending. The lottery is a great read!
I have read 6 of these. I’ll checkout the 3 I haven’t read. Although I also know what I’m seeing. It’s horrifying. 😳
If you haven’t read them yet, add “Lord of the Flies” and “Animal Farm” to that list. They were both required reading when I was in junior high school (1980) and the lessons stuck with me.
I have read them both. Thanks.
I have a collection of banned books. Funny thing is I already have the majority of them and I have already read most of them in school. My next collection will be encyclopedias and dictionaries, since Desantis is getting rid of them in schools.
It’s funny you say that because I have the same: a collection AND read them in school. I have re-read them as an adult.
Keeping encyclopedias is an excellent idea. I would be careful who you choose to tell however. I can see a day when we might be forced at gunpoint to surrender our collections to be burnt.
If it comes to that I’m afraid they will be coming for more than just the books.
Me too. The re education camps would be expanded.
Yeah, I keep thinking I read too many post apocalyptic books and saw films too, but maybe that’s why those of us who did, recognize this shit.
Read It Can’t Happen Here. It’s prophetic
Did you know the sheriff of Greene County Mo was recently talking on KY3.com about how incarcerating 250 "illegals" in the big new Greene County jail is bringing in 8 million dollars a year?
Sounds like the good ol' profitable, slavery days.
What a dystopian bookshelf. I read: Fahrenheit 451 A Clockwork Orange The Handmaid’s Tale saw the films and called it a wrap. Good Science fiction is rare. It should stick to your ribs and fill you. Not to want too Much.
And The Crucible.
I’m rereading that right now. It seemed appropriate.
Read Harlen Ellisons short story-I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream. It lets humans know decades ago WTF they are in for with AI. I am 70 & read it round 18. It will chill you through your bones. Terminator did a very poor copy of this tale.
TBH it’s already there long before, since the start of global dominance: the powerful class grew much powerful by globalization, and the everyday people lost their fight in the imbalance. The root is in the staunch power took too much of a share: they need to give it back. Reverse dispossession, UBI
Someone told me about The Parable of the Sower and I read it and was amazed at how relevant it was to our situation right now. Highly recommended. Unfortunately the author passed away before she could write more than the two books in the series.
You gotta read Atlas Shrugged and The FountainHead!!!
There’s a reason some people want to ban books. And also why these same people only want others to be able to study trades.
@lazytato.bsky.social
Try Jack London The Iron Heel and get really worried.
A big assumption is that everyone wants a democracy, they don't.
And now, all the rest of us that have too, have been trumped by someone who's only read Main Kampf.
Exactly.
Underrated often forgotten masterpiece that feels very much like the U.S. right now: Brazil m.imdb.com/de/title/tt0...
I think the problem is they read these too and used them as step-by-step guides.
Which is exactly why republicans are all about banning books and now abridging free speech
and deleting words and erasing history.
Unfamiliar with The Giver and The Lottery, but I've read the rest, and you couldn't be more right.
I paired all those with holocaust books when I was a teenager. For some reason I was depressed. 😐
Indeed...
Add Death Race to the mix.
I read 1984. I've got some reading to do
Have you read, "It Can't Happen Here."?
Anyone with a basic understanding of history knows what they're seeing.
Philosophy 101: Ten Basic Fallacies
No fallacy detected.
Now read Dark Towers to learn how it was financed.
😔
then watch "the nerumberg trials" from 1969 and remember ur silence is not forgiven
made a mistake the name of the movie is "judgement at nerumberg" from 1961
(bookseller here) = will i now be told what books i can sell? @piperformissouri.bsky.social
Or publishers...what they can publish
Yes. People with fully developed brains and not greedhead blind know exactly what’s at stake here.
"There is no mysticism in the American concept of the State or of the nature of origin of its authority. We set up government by the consent of the governed, and the Bill of Rights denies those in power any legal authority to coerce that consent." R. Jackson, 1943.
The first two on your list. It’s all I need to understand. The others cemented it, for sure.
That sounds more entertaining than studying the Third Reich, but with the latter you can make predictions.
I've only read a couple of those and am willing to confirm what you're seeing. We better get uncomfortable with our actions soon, or we will soon be made uncomfortable.
Unfortunately, it seems our undereducated populace is going to have to learn those lessons by experience. And those of us who did learn those lessons from reading about them and warning of them are going down in the same ship.
If only they had more than six brain cells and the capacity to do critical thinking. Average Republican voter has neither.
I’m not going to “both sides” this bc the devaluation of education is a problem for all of us. The US is ranked 31st in the world for education (+ or _, dep. on source & method). This post isn’t about blame only because that’s a different discussion. I’m sharing info about the nature of the problem.
And yet OK TX MS are firing good teachers over the death of a divisive agitator. Good luck finding anyone except the worst & least talented people to fill these positions. Similar to ID & OBGYN losses. The decline will be real & costly.
That’s the goal. They make no secret of their agenda to dismantle public education.
Decaying Don had his one solution fits all - fire the qualified and talented, replace them with loyalist MAGA & Nazi trash. Pretty soon an uneducated cultcunt will be indoctrinating children at a school near you! Likely with better pay than real teachers with degrees!
Or a Dick 🍆 wad
Already happening in Texas. But then, Abbott's face is stuck up trump's backside.
And the teaching profession is set to lose a good deal more owing to school shooting, retirement of GenX/last of the Boomer generation teachers, and almost zero interest in younger folks going into it. I stopped encouraging people to become teachers long ago. It will get worse. It's what they want.
Seriously dumbing down everywhere.
As much as US Education can be criticized, this is a global phenomenon too. I’m shocked to see fascist movements grow across many G-7 countries.
This is what happens when the emphasis is test scores instead of teaching kids how to think critically.
I hate to say this, but I saw the statistic that 54% of Americans cannot read above a sixth grade level
That's foolish optimism. They've had plenty of time to learn by the time they're able to vote.
FASCISM.
Trump obviously didn't...but Stephen Miller probably did.
Millers “how to” book. Blueprint for Project 25. And to the people who told me I was overreacting and Trump “ won’t be that bad” & “ you’re worried about nothing. He can’t do anything that you fear!” Yeah. Right. Fuck you all.
We can't say we weren't warned what fascism would look like. We just have too many "poorly educated" Trump supporters who like the idea of a Trump dictatorship.
Some voters wanted fascism. Some were manipulated by the right-wing propaganda machine into voting for fascism. The bottom line is, GOP is using fascism to establish Permanent GOP Minority Rule. Rise up America.
When books come to life 😢
I’ve read On Tyranny And Black Earth And Surviving Autocracy How Democracies Die And Strongmen Mussolini to the present day I know what I’m seeing
Octavia E Butler absolutely called our near future.
They warned us. The right took notes.
Same.
We (Russian: Мы, romanized: My) is a dystopian novel by Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin (often anglicised as Eugene Zamiatin) that was written in 1920–1921. Might suit you.....
And we all know the ending to those stories…..
Yup. Haven't read all the new ones. I wish I had started memorizing my book when I was younger. Just didn't know I would have to.
I admire you.
I read The Dispossessed and I know what I'm seeing.
I learned enough in high school (germany) history class to know that we are here! 😳
I am currently rereading 1984 - last time i was in HS - Everyone needs to again, now. Pay particularly close attention to the Goldstein "The Book" that Smith reads the first time. 50 years ago it meant little to me. Today it is prescient. Keep reminding you Orwell/Blair wrote this in 1949.
Now, go back and watch "Birth of a Nation".
Fight now when you still can.
Don’t forget, “It Can’t Happen Here”, by Sinclair Lewis
Me TOO!!!!!
The parallels in ‘1984’ are astounding!!!!
Let me guess…Full throated fascism.
I didn't read all those, I just studied a lot of early to mid 20th century European documentaries, and they looked shockingly like what I'm seeing now.
Same.
And the Diary of Anne Frank. I’m sorry for you, for America, for Canada and for the world. It’s dire.
Same.
It's… It's a COOKBOOK!!
…and Animal Farm. It was literally in all the required reading…FOR A REASON.
I taught that one and you can read it in just a couple hours. I don’t know why we aren’t requiring this shit anymore.
Currently studying it with year ten.
It’s not part of the Bible. This is a theocracy now. you only need one book.
While reading is still legal. Loading a gun & memorizing bible quotes will soon be the entire school curriculum.
My teacher read it to us in the 5th grade! Then a high school teacher required us to read it. I’m sure some parent would throw a fit nowadays about indoctrination 🙄
I still have a copy of the reading list from my high school days (over 50 years ago) and I think anyone suggesting such reading now would end up in a gulag.
I don't have my actual HS reading list from the 80s, but I've had my teenager read the ones I could remember. My parents and school back then (a Catholic HS, btw!) would be considered to be super-liberal if you asked MAGA now.
My kid read Animal Farm in high school recently. But we're in California.
Because the dumbing down of America is no accident.
“One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” is very short too
Requiring? Naw. Banning? Yes. And we all know why.🤦🏼♀️
Yep... most of the books on your list have been banned by the thought policing mamas of Christian Nationalism.
That's why I bought a bunch of those banned books and had my teenager read them over the summer.
Most of them aren’t even banned, but I wonder how many are required anymore, and what the discussions are about. There are certainly more modern day analogues available for reference…
Yes, she actually did get assigned a few of the "banned list" books in school, bc our area in mostly Blue, but there are many areas where kids never even get that opportunity. It's almost like red states/districts are self-segregating themselves and their kids.
🎯
This is the only one I just could not get into. I think having animal characters really threw me off in middle/high school.
I know why "we" aren't requiring it.
In elementary school I did a book report on Animal Farm and all the kids laughed at me but the teacher got it.
Still required reading for my kiddo last year for 9th grade here in WA
The powerful and wealthy don’t want an educated and aware population.
Lots of the flies too
bet trump never read any of them.
Probably didn’t even need the last 3 words of that sentence 😬😆
Some are more equal than others.
You realize that NOBODY is banning Animal Farm (at least in the western world). Also it's a story illustrating the evils and hypocrisy of communism/socialism. Which party is pushing socialist/communist candidates (i.e. mayor of New York City)?
You should reread it. You missed its major point.
Read it dude. If you think Trump is a strongman pushing to create a pseudo dictatorship it's not about that. It's about we're all equal but eventually some are "more equal than others"; a warning about the path that communism always takes. Leaders live large everybody else not so much.
Read his other books dude. Orwell was an outspoken socialist. Fought fascists in Spain with the POUM. Animal Farm is an allegory about the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalin.
BTW, don’t you think leaders are living large and everybody else not so much under Trump’s brand of socialism/authoritarianism?
Communism isn’t *necessarily* authoritarian. You know what is necessarily authoritarian? Authoritarianism. And it can come in all forms, including Trump’s brand of socialism.
Communism isn't *necessarily* authoritarian? Only every time it has been tried (~46 times). If "Trump's brand of socialism" was truly authoritarian Blusky would not exist.
Only if you ignore the times it didn’t & obviously the author of AF didn’t know the future, which is why it’s about totalitarianism told thru the allegory of the Russian revolution. No Dem national leader espouses communism. Lastly, Trump’s brand of totalitarianism is to boil the frog slowly.
Read them now, before they’re a pile of ashes.
Sometimes knowledge sucks…
💯
Me, too for most of these.
Republicans don’t read books, they ban them.
I️ guess the Magats didn’t read these books.
No. You are seeing a bad production of the Marx Bros. Skit: “Duck Soup” Trump is invoking the Marx bros’ SANITY CLAUSE..!🤣
Unfortunately not only have a significant percentage of Americans not read these books or learned critical thinking skills, they believe that reality TV is real. Prime pick’ns for a con artist wanna-be dictator. Those of us who knew what we were seeing, saw this a mile away. INFURIATING
they prepped us for this and now we’re ready… #LFG
GOD WILLING BROTHER 🙏🙏
and the creek don't rise, Sis!
The Lord of the Flies
tRump mentioned Orwell , at the breakfast speech ...
I fear we are rapidly approaching "Lord of the Flies".
& Mein Kampf
🎯 If it can be stomached.
Hi friends can you hear me 💔
And in all of those books and movies Everyone was under the Boot of the Dystopian government it didn't matter if you were (Black Brown Red Yellow Purple Everyone was under the Boot But it always starts somewhere for the US it's Black and Brown People bc WHY the rest of y'all ignore it #NBC #YR
Yep, I hope I'm wrong.
YES.
"The Handmaid's Tale" hit so close to home that by season 3, I had to stop watching it.
Me too
It’s absolutely sickening. I can hardly believe my eyes.
Does it count if I listened to some of them? I’m busy.
Sinclair Lewis It Can’t Happen Here
Me too!😡😳😩🤬
Did u read Animal Farm?
1984 in real time
Exactly
Agreed. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
That’s why books will be banned
Yup I was going to watch the second season of Andor before I cancelled Disney+ but I realized I have read the same books and have a degree in history, I don’t need another lesson in Fascism but I’m glad it was made for others who may need it
You could speak to Hong Kongers who dissented. Or look at Singapore from 1965 to now under one party/family rule.Barisan Socialis, the opposition party boycotted the 1st elections & Lee Kuan Yew moved swiftly to do everything you’re seeing. PAP have been in power since.
You left out The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
When you read "Kingdom of Fear" wear a seatbelt.
V for Vendetta
Yes!!
I’m afraid so… prescient
I am thinking of rereading them…😳
What has shocked me is all the corporations falling into line. But, now we know the power of greed.
Why? They did the same for the Nazis.
It's the same pathology. Our forefathers knew and tried to separate power and religion, perhaps the greatest never to power, out of the influence of reason and common sense.
From a U.K. perspective the USA has always been driven by the greed of a handful of extremely rich people. It’s just more obvious now.
No doubt.
Fascism is the marriage of government-military- corporations
Setting policies to enrich themselves, using Americans to do it.
That's the system disguised as something other than that.. we've unknowingly supported. To our own demise.
If we give up. But, we have three advantages. One, we are Americans. The enemy is corrupt. We are not fooled by fools. Only some of us. Liberty is in the heart. It's the best lever to oppressors. E.Pluribus Unum.
🫂🌹🫂...I needed this today. Thank you.
We always knew the power of greed. We just didn't know exactly how greedy the powerful and wealthy people would be.
We want it all! We want it now! 🙄😬
Yesterday!
I think it's a progressive pathology. The more gained can set the context to seek it out ignoring all other pursuits. Anyone can"enjoy" its results. I know, I worked my way into illness, trying to keep my head above water. But, fortunately, I connected the exhaustion with things and lost the desire.
And that is why we are in the mess we are in. Greed.
It's a human problem.
That's why they ban books
You didn't read Animal Farm?
I read Red Famine and Alex Navalny’s Memoir… I truly know what I’m seeing. History is repeating itself.
Navalny. He was a true patriot. I think of him when I hear the word bandied about in this country.
Yes! It’s an excellent read and it’s even more profound because it’s like he’s speaking from his grave. He truly was a patriot and one of the strongest and bravest men that I’ve read about.
Agree. We were warned. Read the Book of Revelations if you really want a scare.
All the above and binge watched V many times
Let's just start the MAGAts with something with more pictures and less words due to their stunted intellects. Start their list with... The Emperor's New Clothes The Boy Who Cried Wolf Chicken Little
That's a nice reading list. You should start teaching republicans to read with a focus on comprehension. Then maybe take a crack at teaching them critical thinking skills.
Ditto
Same here!
HF is so disgusting. They even tarnish the word revolution, which for the people usually has a positive connotation
I re-read In the Time of The Butterflies recently and as much as it shocked and disturbed me in middle school, it is devastating to read it again and realize most of my country sleepwalked into the same pattern
