A tie between VOTOMS and Layzner.
A tie between VOTOMS and Layzner.
I'd have a hard time choosing between those two myself. Too bad for Takahashi that Tomino exists or his reputation would be undisputed.
VOTOMS and Ideon, I think. VOTOMS is just so well executed in its narrative, and Ideon is so wildly ambitious for a toy show meant for children
Nostalgia is probably coloring it for me, but Big O.
I really love Dunbine, Votoms, and J-Decker.
Also, I really should watch Dougram finally. Since it’s over 70 episodes I’ll probably start this autumn after I’ve moved to L.A. and settled in
Hard to decide but I have to give big points to Dunbine for being a great Isekai. L-Gaim for style points.
I can not really pick between Dougram and Votoms, but I guess Dougram just because first scene of Dougram might be the strongest start to a mecha anime ever tbh.
A surprising amount of people responded with Patlabor, which I'l admit despite the fact that Sunrise did animate the TV series I never think of as their show since it's not their original property. But if I did that would be at the top of my list.
🐰🐱That's the reason Lilly only mentioned Combattler V in passing. Proto-Sunrise did the animation, but the production company was Toei.
VOTOMS, Layzner, pretty much every Brave series
GaoGaiGar, with Big O and Escaflowne following close behind.
Watched Layzer recently and it’s so peak… I found out Bandai Entertainment had planned to dub it around the same time Zeta was dubbed, but the tapes they were sent were worn out and off-coloured so they couldn’t do it 😭 Imagine a world where we got that tbh
Yup! Gorg too! Thankfully we've got them both now. Layzner kills me, they could've just had regular beams but they just HAD to animate them on hard mode
Layzner to me is the proto-Gundam IBO
THE BEAM EFFECTS ARE SO COOL… the way they look like lightning sells how powerful they are :D
But it also inherently makes them more complicated! They didn't have to go that hard
Sunrise: we gotta make this go hard (and maybe also to look less Gundamish) let’s do crazy beam effects Also Sunrise: ah crap we’re out of budget how are we going to end the series
Sunrise: "Oh no our sponsor's heater fan killed people, fuck shit fuck" Finish it in an OVA
WAIT *THAT* WAS PART OF IT?!
I haven't seen all of them yet, but so far it's Patlabor. If Patlabor doesn't count because it isn't a Hajime Yatate joint, then Escaflowne.
My immediate first thought went to Cross Ange, a decision I’m 1000% standing behind
Aura Battler Dunbine
Assuming bebop doesn't count (despite the great mechanical designs) I'd say say Big O and Dunbine
Code geass was my second mecha show i got interested in by sunrise. It was interesting that it was a mecha show that is also not trying to be a mecha show if that makes any sense? Idk.
The real GOAT though is this music video they produced with Crazy Ken Band for a food logistics company. www.youtube.com/watch?v=avNx...
I'm only 28 episodes in to Dougram and it's already a contender. Among the shows I've finished, it's gotta be King Gainer or Gasaraki. Ideon is essentially a Gundam so I took it out of the running.
Wow, Gasaraki is definitely a dark horse there. The main things I remember about that one are a couple of great, "realistic" mecha battles early on, half the characters having the same last name, and the plot ultimately hinging on manipulating the price of grain
Also I do not agree that Ideon is basically a Gundam so I'd still say it's in the running
Full Metal Panic I mean, it features a ship that is a submarine aircraft carrier that launches mecha (sometimes via catapult, sometimes via ballistic missile)
Ooh that's a toughie. Layzner, VOTOMS, GGG or Da Garn possibly.
Probably a tie between Metal Armor Dragonar, Matchless Raijin-Oh, & GaoGaiGar. Giant Gorg is more of a "golem" to me than a "mecha", but I guess that would be right behind those.
I mean we see that TECHNICALLY, assuming the Gorg is identical to the Mannon, it has a cockpit.
But it's much cooler to ride on top of Gorg's head.
No arguments here
Layzner, Escaflowne, Infinite Ryvius.
I should really watch Escaflowne again.
Votoms and Ideon are neck and neck, with Galient right behind.
I still gotta finish Ideon, in my heart I am a poseur
There are simply too many dope shows out there. You are doing great with the ones you have seen. Once I finish Layzner, I think I'm heading to Dougram zone.
Dougram is everything I wanted VOTOMS to be but didn't get
I watched the first episode of Dougram and thought, " damn, that's how you start a fucking show!" I've kind of been running out the clock to see if it got a remaster but I doubt that's happening
DUDE THE FIRST -MINUTE-
On the strength of the design of the Scopedog alone... VOTOMS
I think this and Gaogaigar will be leaders
Yet to see Dougram, so my vote goes to Votoms
King Gainer! Also Patlabor.
I WOULD BE LYING IF I SAID ANYTHING OTHER THAN BIG O
The Heaven's Day episode is a Christmas tradition for me
Patlabor.
All the Patlabors are pretty great- TV, OVA and movies.
I really really dig VOTOMS and GaoGaiGar. Vifam is rad too from what I’ve watched but can’t definitely rank it until I finish the series.
And big O
Big O so far I think is the most common response
Brigadoon
Layzner.
Skullgunners were fucking terrifying
I think maybe Dougram and L-Gaim for me.
A tie between Macross/Robotech and Escaflowne
I am STILL working my way through Dougram and I can't believe this show got made and actually ran for so many episodes (laudatory).
Don't forget, it's the first Real Robot show post-Gundam!!!
It still seems like a fever dream that Che Guevara willed into existence.
Dunbine is positively my favourite. Then Giant Gorg and Escaflowne (honorable mention to Granzort, too).
I was going to say "I guess I can't pick Heybot due to the 2015 restructuring", but I'm picking Heybot anyway as Bandai Namco Pictures were 100% a subsidary of Sunrise at the time.
Love me some VOTOMS.
its either Votoms or The Big O for me, theyre so peak
Still need to watch more non-Gundam shows, but out of what I have, I adored Dougram and I'll have to give the show another watch sometime this year.
Giant gorg and votoms (I'm assuming those are both sunrise?)
They sure are!
Are there any from that era that aren't sunrise? Might be the faster question
Oh believe me there's plenty, Sunrise were just the leader of the pack.
Giant Gorg, its flat out my favorite anime also
eureka seven!
Sorry, but E7 is Bones, not Sunrise.
ah piss i missed that part! hmmm that gets quite hard as there is quite a few, stuck between patlabor and big o now that i think?
even as varied as mecha is, i just think they are extremely unique within the genre and great examples of how far you can go with mecha premises. all you need is a robot after all.
*Music sting*
The Big O
easily VOTOMS
Is it weird that I liked Eureka Seven? Probably.. I’ll see myself out, sorry!
Going 'Surely it's Macross, wait what about Patlabor, wait what about Xabungle, wait what about VOTOMS, wait what about Gunbuster, etc' and then realising that, just based on how many times I've watched it, it's probably that Obsolete show Urobuchi did for Youtube
Macross isn't Sunrise yet.
Oh, I foolishly missed that part of Tom's post
He should ask about favorite MIC show.
Xabungle
VOTOMs, Big O, Code Geass, Dunbine, Escaflowne, Gasaraki, Patlabor, too many to name and too many I'm missing to pick one favorite.
It has to be Escaflowne.
