I think my big mecha hot take is that anyone who genuinely thought a show called "Bang Brave Bang Bravern" would be a serious real robot show is just foolish

People always talk about how the first episode was such a swerve and I just... You saw the show's name, right?
You know what show actually managed a twist like that? I hate to give it any credit, but... Valvrave. Sunrise initially promoted it like a traditional mecha show. The first episode is very structurally similar to a first episode of Gundam. Then all of a sudden... vampire shit! Body swapping!
Honestly the craziest thing to me about Valvrave in retrospect is it was directed by the guy who'd go on to direct Gundam Thunderbolt and written by the guy who'd go on to write The Witch from Mercury
Not to mention the lead designer was also the main Gundam designer on Iron Blooded Orphans
What's even crazier with Valvrave is how they even CGI doctored the footage for the original trailer to make the robot look more heroic then it did in the show itself! youtu.be/cbSnPbY6eiA?...
Damn thanks for reminding me to watch this (i yearn for the spectacle to be clear)
For my money, I don't think "it's a real robot show but everyone acts like Gai from Nadesico" would have been outside of Obari's wheelhouse, and that is indeed what I was expecting- so when The Man dropped out of the sky it was a really nice surprise.
My biggest surprise was that it *wasnt* a part of the Brave franchise.
Did people REALLY THINK THAT? Like come on, you don't put "Brave" into a giant robot title if it's gonna be AT ALL serious.
Okay I was straw manning a little there, but people give that show's twist too much credit all the same
