My guess is they're betting that the progressive wing won't have enough political capital to matter. It's stupid to think that, but that would be my guess

Hubris and the need to keep the status quo will always be the thing that fucks the dems over. With them seeing the progressive branch as a threat to the latter they will never see their fuck up till its too late.
