It’s a good business model! Also Yglesias is smart and has written good and productive things. I just wish he’d stick to his “American democracy is doomed” ideas from 2015 and say that today, rather than finding ways to justify the status quo, seemingly because he believes we can’t defeat fascism.
@mattyglesias.bsky.social got it right in 2015. But this is a scary fight to maintain today. Orwell had it right: intellectuals tend to lean towards fascists because they can see the future and fear it. They are more defeatist than the mass of the people because their imaginations are better.
If you’re annoyed by Yglesias today, try reading “Second Thoughts on James Burnham” and see what you think.
