It's not just the bruising. At the point where the veins that are used repeatedly blow out (and after a point, they do), the area around the IV line gets swollen. Then, the IV has to be re-seated elsewhere. That would explain why, now, the OTHER hand is looking bruised.

What is the purpose of the IVs?

My guess is a cocktail of diuretics and blood thinners to help circulation and fluid retention —but these are hard on the kidneys. I am not a doctor. Just someone who has spent a lot of time around elderly patients including family.

Yeah, I had to take a lot of medical classes for my degree and I could recognize the hand bruises but couldn't recall why it would be needed.
