I'm sure Chekov & Khan discussed La'an when they met during Space Seed! Otherwise, a Romulan Temporal agent can hand-wave all these minor inconsistencies away!

Pike: “Ah, the Romulans are the bogeyman. No one’s ever seen one, nobody even knows what they look like, and yet they get blamed for a lot of things around here.”
More seriously, the temporal war and incursions has been a great way since ENT to explain away any inconsistencies, but as it’s a direct prequel leading into a specific series it might not be the worse thing to reiterate that, or come up with something else that gives fans a clear ‘Oh, I see’ moment
I do enjoy that sense of tidy closure, where a loose end is explained away in an incredibly satisfying way! I've missed it a little. Romulan agents will work, but perhaps won't be as satisfying (Tho I did think it worked very well in Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow for Khan)
