Trump has not guaranteed that he will put sanctions on Russia in 50 days, he has offered Putin protection against additional sanctions for 50 days. And he can always extend beyond that.

This was Trump’s M.O. all along. He’s upset with Putin because Putin hasn’t used everything he has to destroy UKR. When Putin’s troops were at the Polish border Trump would proclaim that he, the peacemaker, brought the war to an end. Trump is a fraud.

I’m not sure what we’re complaining about. Europe still hasn’t applied secondary sanctions on anyone, years into this war. Our sanctions regime is far too weak without any coercive threat against third countries.

Mainly by denying Russia any “victory”. EU can supply Ukraine fully in 1 year from now, but to get there, US weapons are needed now. There will never be a “deal” between Ukraine and Russia => the war will continue until one side gives up/implodes. With US weapons the loser will be Russia

I know all that, but I don't see how Trump's actions apply any pressure. The EU is crippled by the unholy alignment of Hungary, Slovakia and Malta blocking any action that might hurt Russia. Trump has given Putin a 50 day pass of no pressure. Any meaningful alternatives will take more than 50 days.

Well, its very indirect US pressure agreed. But this 50days is declared with such an big fuzz, that Trump is forced to follow-up if no deal. And im sure there wont be a deal. EU + Ukraine are already supplying 90% of needed weapons. Letting EU buy whats missing is a huge step forward.
