Trump played on the naive hope of Ukraine supporters in Europe and the USA, to make them think there was a chance he would do the right thing. There never was a chance, but now Ukraine and Europe as a whole are in a more dangerous place.

With respect, it's a bit early to pass judgment on Trump, especially since he already opened the door to supplying US weapons to Ukraine. I'm not optimistic on a ceasefire, but I will withhold judgment until I see what he actually accomplishes.
