Hi All, Just released my free weekend update. The big story this week the Ukrainians keeping up their ranged campaign against Russian oil refineries and pipelines--and having strategic effect. Putin is warning Russians about shortages and Fico is making nice. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...
It is now feasible to entirely destroy the Kremlin's ability to produce distillates. They cannot cope with the scale of fuel shortages already occurring.
Also, the battle lines hardly moved--no Ukrainian collapse yet! Finally, Putin wants to live forever off the harvested organs of young, healthy people. Next time the Russians talk about using nukes--you might keep this in mind. Putin wants to live, not blow up the world.
So is the Fortress Belt Ukraine's "Lines of Torres Vedras" and will they play out for Putin as they did for Massena? An exhausted army, far from home and faced with a well established defence line?
The sooner he ends up like Lenin, the better for the world.

Good read. Thank you. I keep wondering why Ukraine didn't sustain attacks on russian oil infrastructure before. Lower drone production must be considered. Lack of strategic vision is possible. There are also escalation management and trying to keep TACO from chickening out to consider.
The list could go on, but I'm sure there are factors I'm not seeing. I'm looking forward to getting more of the story after the war ends.
About the "Ukraine is doomed" narrative - It's been a long time I've been really worried about some development on the front. I think it's awful that we allow the strikes on civilians to continue but they will not advance Russia's strategic aims.
Ukraine taking down oil refineries and supply lines, on the other hand, is having an effect. There have been moments I've been very concerned, and that's because of the developments in the - I don't know what to call it - diplomatic space.
