Major Workshop Decision!🤯 Do I build a second shed to store bikes and free up my shed for pure woodworking?🤔 Advantages: Dedicated woodworking area! Bigger workbench possible! Disadvantages: Added cost Delay starting woodworking projects😩 It's a tough call! What would YOU do?! #woodworking #diy

What do you want to make? If you're making small things and you break down your stock outside then you won't need as much room.

1/2 Trying to not get too far ahead of myself with a list of projects. But a variety of sizes really. Indoor / outdoor furniture, home trinkets. I'm on a bit of a journey so I also want to explore alternates like carving...

2/2 I could let the small space dictate the projects. But the idea of the shed being bespoke to woodworking is enticing as you can imagine... I feel like I've entered a huge dilemma!

Sometimes 'both and' is preferable to 'either or'. (-:

If this question was about a small business, the answer would not be IF you expand, but when and how that fits in with your business operations.

Very true! As a budding hobbyist, I am trying to create the best foundation I can for my woodworking journey 🪚

The single biggest challenge for new woodworking businesses is where the hell to do the woodworking and store the raw resources. Optomizing the business tends to focus on better process, layout, and resource/labour management. In Canada, many hobbyists deck out their basement (with air filters)!

That has definitely been my biggest challenge. I suppose you could say I'm in the optimisation and layout stage now! It's certainly a fun challenge.

Pure woodworking shed! A full bench is one of your most important tools

That's part of my thought process. I can carry on as I am. Build the bench as planned. But if I decide to make this change later i'd have to start over to have a bigger bench. Or build a benchstension!!

Build another shop if you can justify the cost. I have been using my garage as a woodworking shop for years and it is no fun. As sawdust builds up so does my frustration .

Keep using the single shed until there's no more room. Then build a bigger shed for woodworking as that expands instead of for the bikes. Gives you more time to see how you use the current space so the future space is better suited and you don't end up with 2 sheds both too small.

Fair point! Although I don't have the space for a bigger shed without spending ££££ on landscaping... So clearing this shed is the best I can do until we eventually move.

Yea best we can do it try and find other spaces for the non-woodworking stuff. Outdoor storage box, small lean-to or garage if you have one would be cheaper than a new shed. Also an option may be to use underutilized space like if you can hang anything from the shed ceiling to free up space.

I also found last year I kept tripping over my lawnmower so I did move a lot of stuff into a storage box I made. That's become handy this year as I tore down the workshop to build bigger but needed somewhere to store what was in the workshop while I don't have one.

This looks great! Nice work. That tamper looks left out, though. Poor thing.

Some of the more robust tools didn't get a spot inside 😂 a bit of rust on the tamper I can live with.

Build yourself a lean to for the bikes next to the shed. Make it complex enough that it will be a worthwhile woodworking project in itself.

This is a great idea, unfortunately, the shed is well sandwiched so no space!

Speaking as someone with basically permanently limited space, I emphatically say...BUILD THE EXTRA SPACE! This is a Cadillac dilemma ;)

If you can afford it, build that dedicated shed. The delayed start on woodworking projects will be worth it, in the long run, if the new space opens up larger/more project possibilities.
