Thanks for your reply! I'm really hoping it is a No.4 and No.4 1/2 and not two 4s! I don't have these yet, but they have been collected for me by a family member. Unfortunately, I don't know when I'll next see them!

I hope that’s the kind of answer you were looking for. Or were you asking about their condition?

It was helpful, thank you! I understand planes and sizes, but identifying them from a photo is not a skill I have... Do you think these can be brought back to serviceable condition?

Absolutely!! I think a few of them probably work reasonably well already. The rust looks mostly surface. Where you can see the frogs, they look undamaged. Assume you’ll need to flatten the soles and sharpen the blades. I think it’s mostly cleaning and rust removal.

That's great to hear, I have never restored a plane so I'll definitely be a bit nervous. I have read some articles on it and will watch more videos etc.. before getting started. These are from a deceased family member so I want to do right by him!

You should probably refinish the knobs & totes: they are pretty worn. If they rattle, you can file down the ends of the threaded rods until they fit (wood shrinkage). At least one has chips in the japaning. I wouldn’t bother myself but you can either rejapan (a pain) or many wld paint

I’m not sure about the two smooths. Both record. I’m trying to work out if one is a 1/4 inch narrower than the other. If so it’s either a 3 and a 4 or a 4 and a 4 1/2 With this many record planes, I’m assuming you’re in the UK? I have my grandad’s old 5 1/2 waiting for some light restoration.
