I lived in the bay area in the 2010s and hung around EA folks. They're exactly what you imagine: people who suck at life but are good at math so they try to turn everything into math. Some got rich off bitcoin. Others would have but lost their encryption keys. Both think that makes them geniuses.

Yep :( Revolting. And then they get together and wank on re how AGI and miniscule far-future possibilities are worth their time and all that money they're honour-bound to make now (never mind the costs), and better than doing good now. (Onanism is fine, but don't dress it up as what it isn't :))
