I was at the doctor's to renew a prescription. He said, "Do you have any other questions?" I said, "Yeah. I've started walking on the treadmill again. How do I know the walk is effective?" He said, "Get your heart rate to 130–150 for 30 minutes." Then we parted. He charged me extra money for that.

I am so irrationally annoyed about this. If I'd known you were going to charge me for a "brief behavioral assessment," I'd have just Googled it, omg.

Sorry, now that I've had a second to cool down, I should clarify, I exaggerated because I was mad. The conversation was a bit longer. But it was like 3 minutes long! He told me what my maximum heart rate is & stuff like that, then we parted. It was NOT long enough for what they're charging me.

still bullshit. the lack of transparency in medical costs is an absolute racket. I don’t understand how it is legal, except for well… all the obvious reasons.

I don’t think there’s anything irrational about that annoyance, that’s fucking robbery. Absolutely unethical.

exactly. Doctors get mad at patients for researching on the internet but then charge stupid money for simple answers found on the internet.

This is 100% a rational annoyance! The amount of times I’ve asked our kids’ pediatrician a random question *when they asked us to* and then got charged extra for that interaction infuriates me!!

That does suck. Rather than get into "why they do that" (systemic health care flaws) I'll just say, target heart rate is definitely something you can DIY explore. Especially given your trade, you might have some fun comparing the various charts and tables stakeholders from the American Heart 1/

Association to fitness equipment and heart monitor manufacturers use to communicate it, literal range bands. Once you realize one of the basic cardiovascular health metrics, resting heart rate, is basically a stat that can be gamed by leveling target heart rate, it's sort of fun to play with. 2/

Saying that as someone who has both run marathons and had my own Ewan McGregor prologue scene in Trainspotting 2 moment during the Pandemic with one of those mirror gyms, so caveat. 3/3
